Spartans Jump Out to Early Lead But Tie #20 Shippensburg

YORK, PA – The York College wrestling team battled Division II Shippensburg University to an 18-18 stalemate Wednesday evening at York’s Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The Spartans move to 1-0-1 while the #20 Red Raiders open their dual meet season with a 0-0-1 mark.
The lightweights proved to be York’s strong point as the Spartans’ took five of the first six matches. Sophomore 125-pound Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) gave the green and white an early 3-0 advantage, tying Shippensburg’s Justin Morris 5-5 but taking the match 6-5 on riding time.
Senior Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) nabbed the 133-pound bout, also securing the win with riding time. After trailing by a slight 2-1 margin to Red Raider Andrew Jones, Flickinger made a move late to tie the match at two apiece. The tough Spartan senior finished out the match racking up riding time to push the score to 3-2 in his favor and the York margin to 6-0.
The green and white extended their early lead to 9-0 when freshman Taylor Ulm (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) bested Tom Wiechelt 5-2 in their 141-pound match. Ulm jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead before tallying three more points in the second. Up 5-0 entering the third and final frame, Ulm successfully defended the on-rush of Wiechelt and secured the 5-2 win for the Spartans.
Shippensburg notched their first victory of the evening when Joey Anceravage captured the 149-pound class. Anceravage shot out to a 4-1 lead over York’s Albert Gleichauf (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) before recording a pin in the second period. With the fall, the Red Raiders cut deep into the Spartan lead, moving the score to 9-6 in favor of the home squad.
Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) put the Spartans back in the win column with a pin in the 157-pound bout over Red Raider Nicholas Brown. Rush led 2-1 after the first frame and then captured the hard-fought pin in the second. Rush’s win by fall pushed York’s lead back to nine at 15-6.
Senior co-captain John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) would notch what would prove to be York’s final win of the evening, securing the victory at 165 pounds.  Shippensburg’s Jake Wilson led Niedrich 2-1 early in the match, however the talented Niedrich battled back in the second frame to lead 4-2, before fending off Wilson in the final round to win 4-3.
With the York lead standing at a seemingly commanding 18-6, Shippensburg would go on to win the final four bouts of the evening, two by a single point, to push the score to 18 all and draw even with the Spartans. The regular season dual meet, which does not require the match to go to criteria, results in the tie for the second time in three seasons.
The Spartans return to action this Sunday when they travel to Collegeville, Pa. for the Ursinus Fall Brawl. The wrestling action is slated for a 9:30 am start.
