YORK, PA-The York College wrestling team
dropped their 2008-09 regular season finale as they fell to
Division II Kutztown University, 30-13, on Friday evening in York,
PA. The Spartans end the regular season campaign with a mark of
15-12-1 while the Golden Bears improve to 9-7-1 for season.
Prior to the match, the Spartans honored their four seniors, Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs), John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), Gary Heckler (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) and Matt Volpe (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield).
Once the match began, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) posted a 6-2 win at 125 pounds. Flickinger earned a tech fall win over Chad Emerick, 25-10, in the 133-pound bout, giving the Spartans a 7-0 lead. The tech fall win only counted for four points because Flickinger did not get any back points in the win.
That’s when the Golden Bears seized control of the match as they got a tech fall win at 141 and a pin fall win at 149 to put Kutztown up 11-7.
Niedrich then closed out his regular season with a dramatic 5-4 win over Chris Chambers in the 157-pound match. That win drew the Spartans to within one at 11-10. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Kutztown won four of the final five weight classes of the evening. York’s Chris Elliot (Crofton, Md./South River) earned York’s final win with a 6-0 victory at 184 pounds.
The Spartans will now prepare for the 2009 Metropolitan Wrestling Conference championships on Sunday, February 22 at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. The Spartans last hosted the championships in 2006, the final year of the old Wolf Gym. The action kicks off at 9:30 am at the Grumbacher Center.
