Kessler Picks Up Win #250 as Spartans Go 2-1 Saturday

YORK, PA – The York College wrestling squad went 2-1 in their four-team quad on Saturday afternoon at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The Spartans knocked off Elizabethtown, 24-9, and Hunter, 24-15, before falling to Cortland, who is ranked 29th in the nation, 27-13, in the nightcap. The victory over Hunter was special for the Spartans as it was the 250th win for York head coach Tom Kessler.
The Spartans, who are ranked 24th in the nation, are now 15-10-1. York has won six of their last eight dual matches.
In their opening match of the day, the Spartans won five straight weight classes in the middle of the match to turn a 6-6 match into a 24-6 lead. Sophomore Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) opened the match with a 6-4 win at 125 pounds. Senior captain Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) followed that with a tight 8-7 victory at 133 pounds. The Blue Jays captured close wins at 141 and 149 pounds, tying the match at six.
The Spartans then seized control of the match. Senior captain John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) began the Spartan streak with a dominating 11-6 victory at 157 pounds. Freshman Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) notched a 6-2 win at 165 pounds, increasing the York lead to 12-6. Freshman Paul Richards (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) recorded a 9-5 win at 174 pounds, pushing the lead to 15-6. Junior Chris Elliot (Crofton, Md./South River) continued the Spartan streak as he posted an 11-4 win at 184. Freshman James Laughlin (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) provided York with their final points as he pinned Jordan Becker in the 197-pound bout. The Blue Jays recorded a victory in the heavyweight bout to provide for the final 24-9 margin of victory.
Against Hunter, the Hawks jumped out to a 9-3 lead with Flickinger recording York’s lone win in the first three weight classes. The Spartans then got back on track with an Albert Gleichauf (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) 9-5 victory at 149 pounds. York tied the match at nine when Niedrich recorded an 11-4 decision at 157 pounds. The Hawks briefly retook the lead with a win at 165 but York closed out the match with wins in three of the final four weight classes to earn Kessler’s 250th win. Richards had a 2-1 win at 174, Elliot got a forfeit win at 184 and Shane Cooley (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern) closed out the match with a pin fall win at heavyweight.
The Cortland match began with a Red Dragon win at 125 and it got worse from there. Flickinger earned a win the hard way as the senior was injured on an illegal throw at 133 pounds, giving York a 6-3 lead. The Red Dragons won the next two weight classes with technical falls before Niedrich won his third match of the day with a 4-0 shutout at 157 pounds. Cortland then extended their lead to 24-9 with wins at 165, 174, and 184. Freshman George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) recorded York’s lone remaining win as he posted an 11-1 major decision win at 197 pounds.
The Spartans return to action on Friday evening as they host Kutztown at 7:00 pm. The Spartans senior day ceremony will precede the match at Wolf Gymnasium.
