Spartans Fall to Wilkes in Battle of Nationally Ranked Squads
WILKES-BARRE, PA- The York College wrestling squad dropped a 28-9 decision at Wilkes University in a battle of nationally ranked squads on Friday evening in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Colonels, who are ranked 19th, improve to 11-4-1 overall while the 28th ranked Spartans fall to 8-8-1 overall.
The final score of the match was not indicative how close the Spartans were in the match. The night began with a pair of tight losses at 125 and 133 pounds. The Colonels built the lead to 13-0 with a decision at 141 pounds and a major decision at 149 pounds. Wilkes picked up a close 3-2 win at 157 pounds before Spartan senior John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) got York on the board with a pinfall win over Richard Sparks. That cut the lead to 16-6.
The Spartans’ Brian Thomason (Wernersville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) edged Frank Heffernan, 5-4, at 174 pounds, drawing the Green and White to within seven at 16-9 with three weight classes left.
Unfortunately for York, the Colonels notched decisions at 184 and 197 pounds to put the match out of reach. Wilkes recorded a forfeit win at 285 to close out the scoring.
The Spartans don’t have much time to recover until they return to the mat as York hosts Centenary and College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans face Centenary at 12:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium followed by a 1:30 pm match against College of New Jersey.
