WESTMINSTER, MD-The York College wrestling
squad opened their 2008-09 campaign with a 31-18 victory over
McDaniel College in a non-conference match in Westminster, MD. The
Spartans are now 1-0 for the campaign while the Green Terror falls
to 0-1.
The Spartans opened the match with a 12-7 win by Gary
Heckler (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) at 125
pounds. The Spartan lead grew to 7-0 as senior Kyle
Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) posted a
15-3 major decision over Peter Caruso at 133 pounds. Freshman
Taylor Ulm (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown)
recorded a 10-2 major decision win over Sean McGarry at 141 pounds,
increasing the York lead to 11-0.
McDaniel got on the board at 149 as Brent Lowe recorded a pin fall
win, cutting the York lead to 11-6. Eric Rush (Hershey,
Pa./Milton Hershey) recorded York’s third major
decision of the night, besting Matthew Peters 14-4 at 157 pounds,
pushing the York advantage to 15-6. Senior John Niedrich
(Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) defeated Zach
Hetrick 10-2 for yet another major decision win for York.
Brian Thomason (Wernersville, Pa./Schuylkill
Valley) notched York’s first pin fall win of the
night as he put Courtney Nightengale on his back in 2:58 of the 174
pound bout. That win increased the Spartan lead to 25-6, ensuring
victory for York.
The Green Terror captured the 184 pound and heavyweight classes,
sandwiching a George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell
Valley Central) pin fall win at 197 pounds, proving York
with their final points on the night.
York returns to action on Saturday at the Kings College Monarch
Invitational at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The tournament
is slated to kick off at 9:30 am.
