Spartans Sweep NYU Quad Saturday
NEW YORK, N.Y. - The York College wrestling squad traveled to New York University on Saturday afternoon for a quad meet. The Spartans arrived back home with a trio of wins as the Spartans swept the three other teams for a highly successful Saturday afternoon trip. The Spartans defeated King’s College, 31-6, Rhode Island College, 19-15, and then completed a sweep with a 22-13 victory over the host Violets. The Spartans improve to 12-9-1 overall for the campaign. NYU is now 6-5, while Rhode Island is 7-1. King’s now stands at 7-13.
The Spartan day opened with the victory over King’s. Sophomore Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) began the match with a 7-6 win at 125 pounds. Senior captain Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) extended the Spartan lead to 9-0 with a pinfall win at 133 pounds. After King’s garnered a win at 141 to cut the Spartan lad to 9-3, Albert Gleichauf (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) rolled to a 3-0 win at 149. Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) earned a 4-0 win at 157 pounds and was followed by senior John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) as he rolled to an 8-0 major decision at 157 pounds. Brian Thomason (Wernersville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) extended York’s lead to 25-3 with a pinfall win at 174 pounds. Chris Elliott (Crofton, Md./South River) and James Laughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) closed out the match with wins at 184 and 197 pounds respectively.
In the victory over Rhode Island, Hartman and Flickinger again posted victories to start the match for the Green and White. Hartman won the 125-pound bout 5-4 and Flickinger recorded a 3-2 win at 133. Rhode Island won the next three weight classes to take a 12-6 lead. Niedrich recorded his second straight major decision with an 11-3 win at 165, drawing York to within two at 12-10. Thomason remained red hot with a 7-1 win at 174, giving York a 13-12 lead. Rhode Island won at 184, giving them at 15-13 lead. Freshman George Saliba (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) earned a 6-2 win at 197 and Shane Cooley (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) iced the win with a 6-0 win in the battle of the heavyweights.
In the nightcap, NYU took the early lead with wins at 125, 133, and 141 pounds as York trailed 10-0. Gleichauf got the Spartans on the board with a 13-5 major decision at 149 pounds. NYU grew their lead to 13-4 after the 157-pound bout, but the Spartans won the final five weight classes to earn the team victory. Neidrich earned a 5-0 win at 165, Thomason gutted out an 11-8 win at 174, and Elliott posted a 5-2 win at 184. Laughlin recorded his second win of the day with a pinfall win at 197 and Cooley earned a 4-0 win in the heavyweight bout.
The Spartans return to action Thursday evening when they travel
to Millersville University to face the Marauders. The match is
scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
