Spartans Earn Two Wins in Three Matches at Whitehill Duals
WILLIAMSPORT, PA–The York College wrestling squad opened
their stay at the 2008 Budd Whitehill Duals in Williamsport,
PA with two wins in three matches. The Spartans began Friday
with a 32-16 win over Muskingum followed by a tough 20-18 loss to
Loras. York closed out the day with a 25-13 win over #25
Wilkes University. The Spartans are now 6-2 for the campaign.
The day began with the win over Muskingum. Junior captain Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) put the green and white up 6-0 with a forfeit win at 125. Sean Hightman (Dover, Pa./Northeastern) increased the lead to 10-0 with a 13-3 major decision win at 133 pounds. Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) posted another major decision win for the Spartans as he defeated Tom Patterson 15-4 at 141 pounds. Erik George (Wrightstown, N.J./Northern Burlington County) pushed the Spartan lead to 20-0 with a pinfall win over Luke Caracofe at 149 pounds. Spartan standout John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) suffered his first loss of the year with a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Dave Minner, allowing Muskingum to get on the board. Senior captain Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) got the Spartans back into the win column with a pinfall victory at 165, expanding the York led to 26-3. Muskingum captured the next three weight classes, trimming the York lead to 26-16. Senior heavyweight captain Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) slammed the door on the Muskies with a pinfall win in his match, providing for the final 16 point Spartan margin of victory.
Against Loras, it was back-and-forth most of the match. Flickinger again put York up early with a 4-2 win over Mark Beatty at 125. After a Loras major decision at 133, Catton won his second match of the day with a 6-5 win at 141. George outlasted Chris Bishop 16-11 in an entertaining match at 149 as the Spartans led 9-4. Niedrich dropped his second match of the day and just the second of the season with a 6-4 loss to Erik Hanson at 157 as the Duhawks drew to within two at 9-7. Alwine recorded his second pinfall win of the day as he put Bret Roeder on his back in 2:02 of the 165 pound bout. Loras’ Brandon Bauer earned a 10-1 major decision win at 174 as the Duhawks cut the Spartan lead to 15-11. Loras took a 17-15 lead after earning a pin at 184. Hank Conklin (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) got the lead back for YCP with an 8-7 decision at 197 pounds, setting the stage for Panizzi to close out the win. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Loras’ Trevor Kaufman edged the Spartan senior 2-0, earning the win for the Duhawks.
Against Wilkes, Flickinger again got the Spartans off on the right foot with a 2-1 win over Shaun Farnham in the 125 pound bout. After the Colonels picked up wins at 133 and 141 to take a 7-3 lead, George picked up his third win of the day with a 10-7 decision at 149 pounds. Niedrich then notched his 17th win of the year with a 12-2 major decision which put the Spartans up to stay at 10-7. Alwine concluded his outstanding day with a third pinfall win. Alwine pinned James Histed in 4:14 of the 165 pound bout as the York lead grew to 16-7. The teams split the final four weight classes with Panizzi getting an injury default at heavyweight to provide for the final score.
Flickinger, George and Alwine were the Spartans’ top performers for the day. Alwine had a trio of pins while George had a pin and a pair of decisions. Flickinger got two decisions and a forfeit win for YCP.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday morning when they face St. John’s College in the eighth round of the tournament. The action kicks off at 9:00 am in Williamsport, PA.
