Spartans Finish Sixth at 20-Team Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, PA–The York College wrestling squad finished sixth at the 20-team, two-day Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The Spartans went 2-1 for the day. They defeated St. John’s 22-21 as the match ended tied at 21-21 before the Spartans earned a team point on the win criteria. They then defeated Springfield 24-18 before falling to Rhode Island 22-15 in the fifth-place match. The Spartans are now 8-3 for the campaign as they are ranked 14th in the nation.

In the match with St. John’s, the Spartans found themselves down 3-0 as junior captain Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) suffered a surprising loss to Mogi Bataar. Jarrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) tied the match with a 7-0 decision at 133 pounds. The Spartans took a temporary 6-3 lead as Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) earned a 5-1 win at 141 pounds. St. John’s took a 9-6 lead with a pinfall win at 149 but York quickly tied the score at nine with an Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) 16-15 win at 157. St. John’s recaptured the lead at 165 with a pinfall victory but Spartan senior Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) got those six points right back with a pinfall win of his own at 174 pounds. Chris Elliott defeated Dustin Baxter at 184 pounds as York took a 21-15 lead. St. John’s took their final lead of the day with a pinfall win at 197 pounds. Spartan senior captain Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) salvaged the tie with a 5-2 win in the heavyweight bout. The Spartans’ six weight class wins allowed them to earn a team point and advance into the next round.

In the win over Springfield, Flickinger bounced back and opened the match with a 16-0 tech fall victory at 125. Hartman recorded his second win of the day as he defeated Blaze Chatham 5-3 in the 133 pound bout. Catton increased the lead to 14-0 with a forfeit win at 141. Springfield cut the lead to 14-9 with a decision at 149 and a pinfall win at 157. Alwine notched his fifth victory of the tournament with an 8-0 major decision win over Victor Stanziale at 165. A Springfield win at 174 trimmed the York lead to 18-12. Elliot notched his second win for the day with a 7-3 victory at 184 before Springfield notched a pinfall win at 197. Panizzi closed out the match with a 9-3 win in the heavyweight bout, providing for the Spartans final margin of victory.

Against Rhode Island, Flickinger began the match with a tight 4-3 win at 125. Rhode Island captured a win at 133 and a major decision at 141 to take a 7-3 lead. Erik George (Wrightstown, N.J./Northern Burlington County) cut the York deficit to one with a 9-5 win at 149 pounds but Rhode Island captured the next four weight classes to blow the match wide open as the lead ballooned to 22-6. Hank Conklin (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) earned a 5-4 win at 197 and Panizzi picked up a forfeit win but it was too little, too late for the green and white to pull out the victory.

Flickinger, Alwine, and Panizzi were the three Spartans with five victories in the Spartans’ six matches for the weekend. Alwine had four pins and one decision while Flickinger had three decisions, one tech fall and one forfeit win. Panizzi got a pair of forfeit wins and three decisions with just one loss for the tournament.

York returns to action on Saturday, January 19 when they host Scranton, Wilkes, and the Apprentice School at the M&T Bank Fieldhouse at the Grumbacher Center. The action is set to kick off at 12:00 pm.
