Flickinger and Niedrich Win Individual Championship as Spartans Finish Fourth
YORK, PA-The York College wrestling squad hosted the 2007 Spartan Invitational at the Grumbacher Center on Saturday. The Spartans finished second of 11 teams in the event. Delaware Valley captured the team championship with 119.5 points while the Spartans finished as the runner-up with 89.0 points.
The Spartans had two wrestlers win individual championships as juniors Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) won their respective weight classes. Sophomore Hank Conklin (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and senior Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) each finished second in their respective weight classes while Brian Adams (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished third at 184 pounds. Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) was York’s fourth top-four finisher as he placed at 141 pounds.
Flickinger, who was named the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, began his day with a 17-2 tech fall over Delaware Valley’s Josh Pollins. He earned a 12-3 major decision in the quarterfinals, beating Elizabethtown’s Matt Torresan. Flickinger punched his ticket to the finals with a 6-5 win over Liberty’s Sean Katz. He won the championship in impressive fashion as he pinned Delaware Valley’s Chris Sheetz in a time of 3:25. Flickinger’s four wins raises his record to 12-2 as he is currently ranked seventh in the nation.
Niedrich opened his day with a 16-2 major decision win over Delaware Valley’s Darren Hacken. Niedrich then rolled to a 15-3 win in the quarterfinals as he defeated Washington & Jefferson’s Keagan Donnan. Centenary’s Mike Torsiello gave Niedrich a tough match but the Spartan junior posted a 4-2 win to advance to the finals. In the finals, he bested Delaware Valley’s Ryan Herwig 8-4 in an entertaining 157 pound championship bout. Herwig entered the tournament ranked fifth in the country while Niedrich is ranked seventh. With his four wins, Niedrich improves to 14-0 for the year.
Conklin had a strong showing for the Spartans at 197 pounds. He began with a pinfall victory over Elizabethtown’s Robert Mount. He then advanced to the finals with a 10-3 win over TCNJ’s Shawn Vanwingerdon. In the finals, Delaware Valley’s Joe West pinned Conklin in a time of 2:54.
Panizzi wrestled well throughout the day en route to finishing second at heavyweight. Panizzi opened his stay in the tournament with a pinfall win over W&J’s Josh Brewer in a time of 3:15. Panizzi then advanced to the finals with a 4-3 win over Steve Carbone from TCNJ. Panizzi fell in the championship round to Kyle Bilquist from Delaware Valley, 6-2. Bilquist is ranked seventh in the nation while Panizzi is ranked eighth in the country. Panizzi is now 12-2 for the campaign.
Adams finished third at 184 as he began the day with a 6-0 win over Gloucester’s Doug Enders. He then beat Centenary’s Ben Ostner 5-1 in the quarterfinals. Apprentice School’s Thad Lloyd defeated Adams 7-3 in the semifinals but the Spartan junior bounced back to win third place as he beat TCNJ’s Joe Bozzomo 3-1 in the third place bout.
Catton opened his day at 141 pounds earned a pinfall victory over Centenary’s Josh Knerr. He advanced to face Jimmy Stevens from Gloucester where he would post a 5-2 win to advance to the semifinals. Liberty’s Colon Lewis sent Catton to the consolation bracket with a 7-4 win. Catton then fell to Centenary’s Jon Stillo, 11-4, in the third place match.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 8 when they participate in the tri-match at Messiah College. The Falcons and Spartans will be joined by SUNY-Morrisville with the action kicking off at 10:00 am.
