WILKES-BARRE, PA-The York College wrestling team finished first of 14 teams at the Kings College Monarch Invitational in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Saturday. The Spartans accumulated 117 team points while Wilkes finished second with 105.5 points. York had one individual champion while they had one runner-up, two third-place finishers and two fourth place finishers.
Junior John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) won the 157 pound bracket for the Spartans. His day began with a pinfall victory over Francisco Lopez from Centennary College. He put Lopez on his back in 2:28. Niedrich then defeated Oneonta’s Sam Vanbuskirk with a 10-1 major decision. He continued to roll with an 8-5 victory over SUNY-Morrisville’s Justin Barowski in the tournament semifinals. Niedrich won the individual championship with a 3-1 victory over Gettysburg’s Andrew Goldstein.
Junior captain Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) finished second at 125 pounds. He started the tournament with a 7-0 win over Elizabethtown’s Matt Torresani. Flickinger then defeated Elizabethtown’s Pete Achilles 5-0 to advance to the semifinals where he beat Oneonta’s Erik Johnson 3-2. Flickinger fell in the finals to Centenary’s Ricky Redd, 3-2.
Senior captain Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) placed third at 165 pounds. He kicked off the tournament with a 10-5 win over Ursinus’ Mike Schwager. He then downed Schwager’s teammate Josh Sabol 7-0 in the second round. Alwine dropped to the consolation bracket with a 4-0 loss to Messiah’s Trent Zemple. Alwine rebounded with a pinfall victory over Oneonta’s Geoff Rosa in 5:23. Alwine captured third place with a 18-2 tech fall over Centenary’s Jared Duffy.
Spartan heavyweight captain Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) finished third in his weight class. He defeated Kings’ John Humble by fall in his first match. Panizzi pinned Humble in 1:40. He then defeated Gettysburg’s Bobby Christopher 13-5 before falling to Oneonta’s Trevor Hiffa, 4-1, in the semifinals. Panizzi bounced back with a 4-2 win over Elizabethtown’s Tim Katzamann. He then captured third with a default win over Ryan Cook from Army.
Freshman Randy Criss (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) at 184 and Hank Conklin (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) at 197 finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
The Spartans, who are ranked 22nd in the nation, return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg University for a match with the Division II Red Raiders. The match begins at 7:00 pm.
