Spartans Sweep Messiah Quad Saturday

YORK PA – The 14th ranked York College wrestling squad rolled to a trio of victories on Saturday as they swept the Messiah College Quad in Grantham, PA. The Spartans defeated Morrisville State 44-10, host Messiah 28-16, and Johns Hopkins 24-19.  With the three wins York moves to 4-1 on the season

In their convincing win over Morrisville, five Spartans earned pin falls while Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) earned a 15-0 tech fall over Nate Seymour.  In the 125 bout, Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) pinned Vito Argese in a mere 45 seconds.  Not to be outdone, 149-pound Erik George (Wrightstown, N.J./Northern Burlington County) bested Flickinger by two seconds when he took down Brett Buell in 43 ticks. Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) captured another fall for the green and white when he dropped Dan Rudy at the 2:50 mark.  In the 174-pound class, Jamie Arze (Annandale, Va./Annandale) earned the Spartan win pinning Dinardo Joseph at 4:25, while heavyweight Shane Cooley (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) put Jameson Lawton’s shoulders on the mat at 4:15. Albert Gleichauf (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and Hank Conklin (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) picked up York’s other two victories against the Mustangs.

Squaring off against the hosts proved to be more of a challenge for the Spartans but York was able to prevail with the 12-point victory. Conklin was the only Spartan to earn a pin fall dropping Messiah’s Dando Speers in a blistering 17 seconds.  Flickinger and heavyweight Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) secured major decisions with a 13-0 win over Bryce Stever and a 21-8 victory against Mike Kincaid respectively.  At 174-pounds, Alwine moved up from the 165-pound division to take Dave Jones 8-5 while Randy Criss (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) attained a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Matt McHugh at 184.  York’s 157-pound standout John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) won his match with Mike Bressler with a 7-4 decision.

The Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins proved York’s toughest test of the quad-meet even though the Spartans walked away winning seven of the ten weight-classes.  York’s only fall came from Flickinger as he dropped Jared Hullet at the 4:16 mark.  Sean Hightman (Dover, Pa./Northeastern) garnered a major decision in the 133-pound class with a 10-2 victory over Xavier Mohammaed, while 149-pound Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) defeated Jim Crumlish with a 16-5 major decision.  Niedrich and Conklin added two more major decisions taking their matches 15-2 and 11-2 respectively.  Alwine and Panizzi also racked up wins to secure the York victory.

One the day, the Spartans went 3-for-3 at the 125, 157, 174, 197, and 285-pound weight classes.  Individually, Flickinger, Conklin, and Alwine took home three victories apiece.  Flickinger once again proved why he was a 2006 All-American with a pair of falls and a major decision as he moves to 15-2 on the season.  Conklin’s pin fall, major decision, and forfeit victory ups his record to 12-5. Alwine (10-5) was successful at two weight classes winning one match at 165 while grabbing two wins in the 174 division.  Niedrich continues his incredible junior campaign as he increases his win total to 16 in as many matches. Panizzi’s pair of victories improves his senior mark to 14-2.

The Spartans break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on January 11 when York is set to travel to Williamsport, PA for the Budd Whitehill Duals.  The wrestling begins at 9:00 am.
