YORK, PA-The York College wrestling squad opened their 2007-08 season with a 30-21 non-conference win over McDaniel College on Wednesday night at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The Spartans, who are ranked 22nd in the nation, improve to 1-0 for the campaign while the Green Terror fell to 0-1 for the season.
The Spartans opened the match with a tech fall from returning All-American Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs). Flickinger needed just 3:45 to outscore McDaniel’s Jesse Kolb 15-0 at 125 pounds.
The Green Terror took their only lead of the night as Tim Hall notched a pinfall victory at 133 pounds. That allowed McDaniel to take a brief 6-5 lead. The Spartans retook the lead just seconds later as Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) was awarded a forfeit win at 141 pounds as York led 11-6 through three weight classes. Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) posted a pinfall win over Tom Boehm as he put Boehm on his back at the 5:57 mark of the 149 pound bout. That increased the Spartan lead to 17-6.
York’s John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) pushed the Spartan lead to 23-6 as he pinned Matt Peters in the 157 pound match-up. Niedrich’s pin came just nine seconds into the second period. Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) posted a hard fought 3-1 win at 165 pounds as the York lead grew to 26-6.
McDaniel went on a roll and won the next three weight classes to draw to within five at 26-21 heading into the heavyweight match. That match went the way of the green and white as senior Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) posted a 9-0 major decision to secure the win.
The Spartans return to action at the Kings College Monarch Invitational on Saturday. The event kicks off at 10:30 am.
