NEW YORK, NY-The York College wrestling squad rolled to a 38-6 victory at Hunter College on Saturday afternoon in New York, NY. The Spartans, who are ranked 24th in the nation, improve to 14-5 overall while the Hawks fall to 3-9 for the campaign.
The Spartans began with a Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) medical forfeit win at 125 pounds. Sean Hightman (Dover, Pa./Northeastern) then notched a 6-1 win at 133 as the Spartans led 9-0 through the first two weight classes. Junior Ryan Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) posted a solid 5-2 win at 141 pounds as the York led grew to 12-0. The Hawks got on the board with a win at 149 but York’s John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) notched a 16-0 tech fall at 157, increasing the York lead to 17-3. Senior Brian Alwine (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) recorded an 8-6 win at 165 pounds. Jaime Arze (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Chris Elliot (Crofton, Md./South River) were awarded forfeit wins at 174 and 184 as the York lead grew to 32-3. The Hawks got their second win at 197 but senior Luke Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) closed out the match in impressive fashion with a pinfall win in just 2:02 in the heavyweight bout.
The Spartans conclude their 2007-08 regular season on Friday night when they travel to Kutztown to face the Golden Bears at 7:00 pm. York will then begin preparations for the 2008 Metropolitan Conference Championships on Sunday, February 24.
