Spartan Women Lock Down Second Seed with 11-5 Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College women's lacrosse team locked up the second seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with an 11-5 win at St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans improve to 5-1 in the league and 12-3 overall while the Seahawks fall to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game as Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) each found the back of the net for the Green and White.
Tori Poffenberger got the Seahawks on the board with 19:18 left in the first but York scored three of the next four goals of the game to take a 5-2 lead. Christy Bishop scored at the 4:15 mark to trim the Spartan lead to 5-3 at the break.
After the teams traded goals to start the second half, York ripped off a five-goal spurt to give York an 11-4 lead. Brittany Noell (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Mulford scored two goals during the run as the Green and White cruised to the win.
Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Mulford powered the Spartan offense with three goals each. Noell added two goals while Allison Kolacy (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) contributed a goal and an assist for two points. Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) dished out two assists for York.
Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) grabbed five draw controls for York while she also had a goal. Karlie Dougherty (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) had three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory.
Bishop and Poffenberger led the Seahawks with two goals each. Claire McGagh scored the other St. Mary's goal.
Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) recorded 13 saves in her 60 minutes in goal. Kayla Dunn suffered the loss for SMC as she allowed the 11 Spartan goals with 13 saves in her 60 minutes of play.
The Spartans outshot the Seahawks 29-25 while St. Mary's held a 15-13 edge in ground balls. The Spartans won the battle of draw controls 14-5 while York was also 3-of-7 on free position shots.
The Spartans conclude their 2014 regular season with a trip to Christopher Newport on Saturday. First draw in Newport News is set for 1:00 pm.
