WASHINGTON, D.C. – The York College women's lacrosse team notched a 10-4 non-conference win over Catholic University on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Spartans improve to 8-3 overall with the win while the Cardinals fall to 5-4 with the loss.
The Green and White jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the opening half of play. York got two goals from Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) to open the scoring. Nicolich scored her eighth and ninth goals of the year to stake the Spartans to the 2-0 lead. Freshman Gina Bieneman (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) finished off a free position chance with 16:20 left in the half to give York the three-goal lead.
The Cardinals responded with back to back goals within a minute ten of each other, cutting York's lead to 3-2. The Spartans answered with two goals before the half as Nicolich struck again for a goal at the 11:17 mark followed by a Marissa Gochar (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) tally with 3:15 remaining in the half.
York pushed the lead to 8-2 with three goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half. Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) found the back of the cage 7:11 into the second half. Megan Stine (Stevensonville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) scored off a Ritchey pass with 21:21 remaining in the game. Kim Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) capped the run with her second goal of the year with 19:53 showing on the clock.
The Cardinals halted the Spartans' five-goal spurt but Ritchey pushed the York lead back to six with her second goal of the game just over seven minutes after the Catholic goal.
After the Cardinals scored their fourth goal of the game, Gochar closed out the scoring with an unassisted tally with 8:45 left in the game.
Nicolich led the Spartans with a three goals on just three shots. Ritchey was also very good for York as she had four points on two goals and two assists. Ritchey recorded two ground balls and was 1-for-1 on her free position opportunities. Stine also notched four points for York with a goal and three assists in the win. Freshman Macey Yates (Davidsonville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) collected team-high five ground balls for York while she also forced two Cardinal turnovers.
The Cardinals had four different goal scorers in the loss. Madeline Wilson was their lone multi-point scorer as she had a goal and an assist. Lindsay Brophy led Catholic with four draw controls, two ground balls and an assist.
York finished the game with a 32-20 margin in total shots while they also had a 29-24 advantage in ground balls. The game was very sloppy as York had 21 miscues while the Cardinals committed 26 turnovers. Catholic won 11 of the game's 16 draws.
Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) earned the win for the Spartans as she recorded eight saves in her 60 minutes of action. Yasmeen Ajdari suffered the loss for the Cardinals despite making 15 saves for CUA.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. First draw is set for 12:00 pm.
