YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse team notched their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the year as they rolled past Wesley College 19-2 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans improve to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while the Wolverines fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
York got the scoring started just 35 second into the game as senior standout Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) found the back of the net for the game's first score. Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) followed suit 37 seconds later as she scored the Spartans' second goal.
The Green and White built the lead to 6-0 before the Wolverines got on the board on a Rylee Gould free position shot that just trickled into the goal for Wesley's lone first half goal with 23:50 remaining in the half.
The rest of the first half would be all York as the Green and White ripped off eight straight goals over the final 20:41 of the stanza.
The Green and White's bench brigade kept their first half momentum going as they scored the first five goals of the second half to push the lead to 19-1. Gould scored again with 5:08 remaining in regulation to close out the scoring for the day.
The Spartans played a majority of their starters for just 15 minutes before giving a number of other players a chance to shine. And shine they did as the Spartans got 15 of their 19 goals from non-starters in the contest.
Brittany Noel (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) led the Spartans with a career-high four goals as she did her damage on just five shots. Freshman Katelyn Cattrano (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) added a career-high five points on two goals and three assists for YCP. Freshman Gina Bieneman (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) added three goals and three draw controls for York. Mulford and Bri Boyer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) each added two goals to the Spartans' offensive effort.
Senior Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) was outstanding on the draw as she won a career-high nine in the win while she also had a goal for York.
Gould scored both of the Wolverine goals in the loss as she now has 11 for the campaign.
Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) earned the win as she played the first 17:41 of the game. She registered one stop as she improves to 7-2 for the season. Rachel Donovan (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) made her Spartan debut in cage as she notched two saves in her 42:19 in net.
Katherine Cooke went the distance in net for Wesley as she allowed the 19 Spartan goals. She did record five saves for the Wolverines.
York finished the game outshooting the Wolverines 29-6 overall while they held a slight 8-6 margin in ground balls. York won 20 of the 23 draw controls in the match.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Gettysburg College to face the nationally ranked Bullets in a key regional tilt. First draw is set for 4:00 pm.
