#2 Salisbury Downs Spartans in CAC Title Contest

SALISBURY, MD – The York College women's lacrosse team came up short in their quest for the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference championship as the second-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls defended their conference title with a 13-5 win on Saturday in Salisbury. The Gulls have now won the last 11 CAC championships.

Salisbury improves to a perfect 18-0, as they have not had a game in which they have won by less than six all year. The Spartans fall to 13-4 overall, as they must now hope for an NCAA At-Large berth to continue their stellar 2013 season.

The Gulls tallied the opening goal before the Spartans quickly answered with a Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) unassisted goal at the 25:56 mark. The Gulls then ran off four straight goals over the next 14 minutes to seize a 5-1 lead.

The Spartans would keep the Gulls off the board the remainder of the half but York could only manage a Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) tally off a Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) assist with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half as they trailed 5-2 at the break.

The Sea Gulls pushed the lead to 7-2 early in the second half as Katie Bollhorst and Halie Lear scored the first two goals of the second stanza before Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Delaware County Christian) stopped the run with a goal at the 20:14 mark. Salisbury then reeled off four straight goals to push the lead to 11-3. Wayson notched her second goal of the game at 6:09 on a free position shot but it would not be enough to stem the tide as the Gulls scored two more before Wayson closed out the scoring with a goal at the 4:26 mark.

Salisbury outshot the Spartans 26-21 in the game while they also held a 10-7 edge in ground balls. The game was clean as York had just eight turnovers while Salisbury committed just seven. The Gulls held a 12-8 advantage in draw controls for the game.

Ashton Wheatley improved to 18-0 in cage as she registered nine saves in her 60 minutes of work. Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) recorded 11 saves in her 60 minutes between the pipes for York.

Bollhorst, the 2013 CAC Player of the Year, led the Gulls with six points on three goals and three assists. Katie Haker and Lauren Feusahrens each added three goals while Maggie Roundy chipped in with a pair of tallies for the Gulls.

Bethany Baer won seven draws for Salisbury while Wheatley led the Gulls with six ground balls.

Wayson powered the Spartans as she scored three goals. Nicolich and Castle picked up the other goals for York. Karlie Dougherty (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) notched two ground balls while Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding) each earned three draws for York.

The Spartans will find out their post-season fate on Sunday evening as the NCAA Tournament field will be announced after 9:30 pm. Please check www.ycpspartans.com for complete tournament information for the Spartans.
