Stine Shines As Spartans Blaze Past Frostburg

YORK, Pa. - Freshman Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) scored a game high five goals in the York College women's lacrosse 23-1 Capital Athletic Conference win against visiting Frostburg State on Tuesday afternoon.
The 23 Spartan goals also ties the single-game total goal record that was set on March 11, 2008 at Hood College. With the win, the #11 Spartans improve to 10-2 overall and stay undefeated in conference play at 4-0. Frostburg drops to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the CAC.
Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) was the first to get the blazing Spartan offense started. Just three minutes in, Mulford notched the first goal of the game. Less than two minutes later, Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) recorded her third goal of the season off a pass from Lauren Kula (Fredericks, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson).
The Bobcats scored their first and only goal of the game at 24:15, cutting the Spartan lead to one.
Senior Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) quickly added to the Green and White's lead with a goal at 23:34. After a York timeout, the Spartans took complete control of the game. The offense exploded and the defense was solid. The Bobcats had no answer for the Spartans, who finished off the first half with 13 more goals.
The second half saw the Spartans continue to dominate in every aspect of the game. York's defense and goal keeping kept Frostburg shutout the entire second half.
Stine scored her third goal of the game at 26:44 to open up the second half. With 13:18 remaining, Brianna Boyer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) scored her first goal of her career to put the Spartans up 20-1. Kim Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added the final goal with 2:18 remaining in the game.
York held tremendous advantages in statistics. The Spartans outshot the Bobcats 39-3 and also picked up 16 ground balls to Frostburg's five. The Bobcats committed 17 turnovers and York only had eight, while the Spartans also dominated 19-7 on draw controls.
Pacing the red-hot Spartan offense was Stine with five goals. Four other Spartans finished the game with three points. Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern), Mulford and Schultz each tallied three goals. Allison Kolacy (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) recorded one goal and two assists. Also adding to the Green and White offense was Kula, Brittany Noell (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady Of Good Counsel), Jenna Hiponia (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Nicolich, all with two points. Recording one point each for York was Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip), Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York), Kasie White (Glen Burnie, Md./North Country), Ritchey and Boyer.
Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had an extremely strong day as well. She finished with a single-game high eight draw controls.
Starting goalkeeper Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) earned the win in the net for the Spartans. She played the first half, allowing one goal and making one save. Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) played the second half and made one save.
The only players to record points on offense for the Bobcats were Chelsea Feen, with a goal and Jessica Jones, with an assist.
In the goal, Naomi Swann recorded the loss. Swann allowed 16 goals and made 10 saves. Karoline Miller came in for Swann in the second half. Miller allowed seven goals and made three saves.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday at home for Senior Day against Haverford College. The game is set to start at 4:30 pm.
