Wayson Passes 250 Career Points as Spartans Roll Past Ursinus

CLEARWATER, FLA – The York College women's lacrosse squad rolled to their second straight win as the 11th ranked Spartans notched a 12-4 non-conference win over Ursinus on Thursday morning in Clearwater, Florida.

The Spartans improve to 3-1 overall while the contest was the Bears' season opener as they are now 0-1.

York took the play to the Bears early as they had three free position goals in the opening six-plus minutes of the game. Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) opened the scoring with a free position goal at the 27:10 mark. Just over four minutes later, Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Delaware County Christian) converted a chance from the eight-meter arc as York led 2-0. Mulford struck again on a FPS at the 22:58 mark, extending the York lead to 3-0.

The Spartan offense kept the pressure on the Bear defense. Senior Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) scored back-to-back goals to push the York lead to 5-0 with 14:19 left in the half. Lauren Kula (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) made it 6-0 and then senior standout Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) ripped off four straight goals to push the lead to 10-0. Kula capped the first half scoring with her second goal of the game with 1:49 remaining before the break.

The Spartans peppered Ursinus goalie Margaret Philbin with 29 first half shots.

The Green and White scored their final goal of the game just over five minutes into the second half as Castle found the back of the net off a pass from Wayson.

The Bears would then score four times over the final 20 minutes of the game to provide with the Spartans' final eight-goal margin of victory.

Wayson led the Spartans with six points on four goals and two assists. Wayson went over the 250-career point mark for the Green and White. She now has 188 career goals and 64 assists for 252 points. Mulford recorded two goals and two assists for four points while Castle, Kula, Shultz, and Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) each contributed two points for York.

Senior captain Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding) collected seven draw controls in the game while she also had a pair of caused turnovers.

Devin Brakel notched two goals for the Bears while Kathleen McElroy and Kitty Dawsom also tallied goals for Ursinus.

Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) started in goal for York and wasn't tested as she made one save in her 39 minutes of work. Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) surrendered the Bears' four goals in 12 minutes without making a save. Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) played the final nine minutes and recorded one save.

Philbin went the distance between the pipes for the Bears as she notched 18 saves.

The Spartans finished the game with a 39-8 advantage in total shots while the Green and White went 4-for-9 in free position shots. York also collected 15 of the 18 draw controls in the game.

The Spartans return to York to host Catholic University in the Green and White's 2013 home opener on Wednesday afternoon. First draw is slated for 4:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
