ORLANDO, FL – The York College women's lacrosse team opened their stay in Florida with a 16-2 win over Alvernia University in a non-conference contest in Orlando on Tuesday night.
The 11th ranked Spartans improve to 2-1 on the season while the Crusaders fall to 0-2-1.
The Spartans came out firing as the Spartans accumulated 12 goals in the first half. The Green and White added four in the second half as every healthy field player got playing time in the win.
Junior Kim Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) tallied a career-high four goals in the victory. She scored her four goals on just four shots. York also received three goals from senior Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) added three goals while Kerri Nicolich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) added two goals each. Melissa Ritchey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) dished out two assists for the Spartans.
Junior Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) drew the start and earned the win in goal for the Spartans. She registered four stop while allowing two goals in the opening 30 minutes of play. Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) played the second 30 minutes and recorded one save as she did not allow a goal.
Jacquelyn Strange recorded both of Alvernia's goals in the first half.
The Spartans finished the game with 31 shots, 17 ground balls, and 13 draw controls. York was 15-for-17 on the clear while they converted 5-of-6 free position shots, a season-high for the Green and White.
Karlie Dougherty (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) led the Green and White with three caused turnovers while Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./Central York) had a very good overall game as she had a goal, a team-high three draw controls, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the win.
The Spartans conclude their trip to Florida on Thursday when they face Ursinus in a non-conference contest in Clearwater, Florida. Game time is set for 10:00 am.
