Spartan Offense Keeps Clicking as York Downs Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC – The York College women's lacrosse team continued their strong start to the 2012 season as they rolled past Greensboro College 17-5 in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, NC.

The Spartans improve to 3-0 for the campaign while the Pride falls to 0-1.

The Spartans struck first just 1:44 into the game as sophomore Erica Mulford opened the scoring with her first goal of the day. The Pride tallied the next two goals of the game, scoring twice in a 23 seconds span as they took a short-lived lead over the Spartans.

Sophomore Melissa Ritchey evened the score just over a minute later as she scored off a pass from junior Kim Wayson. Ritchey's goal started a five-goal run for the Spartans as York took a 6-2 lead.

The Pride trimmed York's advantage to 6-4 on consecutive goals prior to the half. The Spartans halted the Greensboro run with a Wayson goal off a free position shot with 1:55 left before the break.

Wayson's goal started a ten-goal run as the Spartans turned a close game into a rout. York didn't allow another Greensboro goal until the 11:12 mark of the second half. York's Kim Nicolich closed out the scoring with a goal off an Allison Green assist with 5:25 remaining in the game.

Junior Leah Schultz powered the Spartan offense as she poured in four goals while she also had six ground balls. Wayson added three goals and two assists while Green and Mulford each added three goals.

Melissa Gallaher led the Pride with two goals and two assists in the loss.

Kelsey Evans started in goal for the Spartans and recorded five saves in 47:14 to earn the win. Ashley Smith played the final 12:46 and notched four saves while she allowed one goal.

Tierra Lyles played all 60 minutes for the Pride as she allowed all 17 Spartan goals while she made eight saves.

York outshot the Pride 31-18 in the game while the Spartans also had a 37-30 edge in ground balls. The Green and White won 13 of 23 draw controls while the Spartans converted 5-of-7 free position shots in the win.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday, March 1 when they host Alvernia in a non-conference contest. First draw is set for 4:00 pm in York.
