YORK, Pa. – Junior Kim Wayson and sophomore Kerri Nicolich each netted four goals Friday afternoon as the York College women's lacrosse team posted an 18-4 non-conference triumph over visiting Goucher to open up the Spartans' 2012 home slate. The Green and White improve to 2-0 on the season while the Gophers begin the campaign at 0-1.
Wayson, coming off a three-goal performance to open the year, registered four tallies and two helpers to bring her early season total to seven and four, respectively. Nicolich, who also notched three goals in York's opener, found the back of the net on four occasions against the Gophers Friday afternoon, including back-to-back goals just 31 seconds apart toward the end of the first half.
York put together an outstanding offensive effort, led by Wayson and Nicolich, which included goals from eight different Spartans as well as a total of 10 assists for their 18 goals.
However, it may have been the Green and White's tremendous defensive work that proved most impressive. York's intense pressure, highlighted by a quality ride that the Spartans utilized throughout the contest, made every possession difficult for the Gophers. In total, the York defense only allowed five shots over the 60 minutes of play, three of which came via free position attempts. Additionally, the Green and White collected 15 draw controls to Goucher's nine, limiting the Gophers' possessions.
To begin the contest, the Spartans were on the offensive early as rookie Sarah Castle gave the home squad the lead just 13 seconds into the contest. Grabbing the opening draw control, Castle raced down the field before firing home her second goal of her collegiate career. Castle set the tone for the Green and White and sparked a 4-0 York run as Nicolich, Melissa Ritchey, and Erica Mulford each scored over the first 6:33.
Goucher responded with their first goal of the game at the 17:10 mark, courtesy of Anneke Ossorio, but that would be as close as the visitors would come throughout the rest of the contest.
Over the final 16:29 of the first half, the Green and White put together a 7-1 run to capture an 11-2 lead heading into the break.
Midway through the latter frame, the Spartans extended their lead to 15-3 courtesy of Ritchey's second of the day with 14:50 left. Following Goucher's final goal, Wayson netted back-to-back tallies before Nicolich finished off the game's scoring on an unassisted goal with 3:40 remaining.
For the game, Mulford tallied three times while Jenna Hiponia added two. Kim Nicolich and Lauren Kula each scored for the Green and White while Megan Brown posted two helpers. Defensively, Jordan Hall, Kerri Nicolich, and Leah Schultz each recorded two caused turnovers.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, February 26, as they travel to Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C. York is set to square off with the Pride at 11:00 am.
