YORK, Pa. – The York College women's lacrosse team continued their blitz on the 2011 campaign Saturday afternoon as they cruised to a 21-6 non-conference triumph over visiting St. Vincent. With the win, the Spartans improve to a strong 7-1 on the season while the Bearcats open up the year at 0-1.
Kim Wayson and Kerri Nicolich led the way for the Green and White as they each tallied four goals. Wayson, who is now only one goal shy of tying York's career record of 94, also supplied a trio of assists. Wayson and Nicolich, whose four goals is a career-high, proved on the same page on a pair of occasions as Wayson fed Nicolich on back-to-back goals toward the latter part of the first half.
Freshman Jenna Hiponia, who drew her first collegiate start against the Bearcats, had a superb performance. The rookie attack scored twice for York while also distributing three consecutive assists during the first frame..
The Spartans jumped out front early and had a firm grasp on the lead within ten minutes of play. York opened up a 5-0 lead over the first 8:09 of play, a burst capped off by senior Molly Kerrigan courtesy of Hiponia's second assist.
That 5-0 margin expanded to 13-2 by halftime and then to as much as 20-3 in the second half.
Overall, the Spartans had 11 different players score at least one goal, including Leah Schultz, Kimberly Nicolich, and Katie Bowers.
York picked up a huge 21-8 advantage in draw controls while they also caused eight Bearcat turnovers.
With a week until their next game, the Spartans now turn their collective attention to Saturday, March 26. York is slated to travel to Salisbury, Md. to face the #1-ranked Sea Gulls in a 4:00 pm Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
