FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2011 campaign on Saturday, falling to host Mary Washington 13-8 in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 5-1 (1-1 CAC) while the Eagles improve to 5-3 (2-1 CAC).
Mary Washington jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game as Catherine Kennedy notched her first of five goals on the day. Kennedy proved a huge thorn in York's side as she posted nine points on five scores and four assists.
The Eagles eventually stretched their lead to as much as 6-1 in the first, courtesy of four straight tallies three of which came within a 43 second span.
York did cut into that Mary Washington as Kim Wayson tallied back-to-back scores for the Green and White. However, the Eagles' Kennedy closed out the first half with her third goal of the game as Mary Washington took a 7-3 lead into the break.
The second half saw Mary Washington grow their lead to as much as seven at 12-5 with 11:57.
For Mary Washington, Kennedy's five goals increase her season total to 32. Lauren Callison added a trio of scores for the Eagles while Allie Kimmelman scored a goal and recorded two helpers.
Wayson and fellow sophomore Leah Schultz each scored twice for York. Schultz had a strong all-around game as she also recorded five draw controls, two ground ball, and two caused turnovers.
For the game, the two sides were remarkably similar in most of the team statistics. York outshot their hosts 27-25, while taking a 13-10 advantage in draw controls. Mary Washington held a 19-17 lead in ground balls.
The Spartans will look to get back on the winning track when they return to action on Tuesday, March 15. York is set to host Marymount in a 4:00 pm CAC tilt.
