Spartans Cap St. Croix Trip with 15-5 Triumph over RIT

ST, CROIX, VIRGIN ISLANDS – Kim Wayson tallied a game-high five goals and Leah Schultz scored three times as the York College women's lacrosse team posted a 15-5 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology Wednesday in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. The non-conference triumph boosts York's early season mark to an unprecedented 4-0 while the Tigers open their season at 0-1.

Wayson continued her early season scoring barrage as she has scored at least four goals in each of York's first four contests. So far this season Wayson has already tallied 20 goals, after scoring 57 all of last year.

Following a scoreless first 9:29, the Green and White opened up a flurry of offensive production. Over the final 20:31, York scored 11 times and did not surrender a single RIT goal.

Schultz tallied the Spartans' first of the game at that 20:31 mark which began a streak of 14 straight York goals, which carried over into the second half.

Owning a huge 11-0 margin at the break, the Green and White extended their lead to 14-0 with second half goals by Schultz, Lauren Kula, and Jenna Hiponia. Hiponia's tally proved the final in York's lengthy run, as she scored with 22:44 remaining in the game.

York cruised over the final 22 minutes of the contest to secure the 15-5 triumph. Notably, sophomore defender Katie Vautier notched the first goal of her collegiate career as she recorded York's final goal of the game, during a man-down situation, with 3:45 remaining.

In addition to Wayson and Schultz, fellow sophomore Kasie White registered a goal and two assists for the Spartans while Toni DiLeonardi, Melissa Ritchey, and Erica Mulford also tallied.

Defensively, the Spartans allowed a mere 13 shots including just four attempts over the first 30 minutes. Starting goalkeeper Tina Nicklas picked up the win for the Spartans as she manned the pipes during York's relentless first half. Kelsey Evans saw her first game action of the season as she relieved Nicklas for the second stanza.

The Spartans now return home in preparation for their first home game of the 2011 season. York will line up against visiting Dickinson on Tuesday, March 8, as game time at Kinsley Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
