Spartans Post 18-4 CAC Victory in Season Opener
DOVER, Del. – The York College women's lacrosse team got their 2011 campaign off to a rousing start Saturday afternoon as they topped host Wesley 18-4 in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The Spartans begin the year at 1-0 (1-0 CAC) while the Wolverines start 0-1 (0-1 CAC).
Sophomore Kim Wayson led the charge for the Green and White as she scored four goals on the day. A 2010 All-CAC selection, Wayson recorded ten total shots and picked up four ground balls.
York put together a tremendous start, scoring the contest's first five goals. Wayson, who tallied two of the Spartans' first four, opened the 2011 scoring just 1:51 into the game off an assist from freshman Kerri Nicolich.
By halftime, the Green and White had posted a 7-1 lead as the only Wesley goal came from free position attempt.
The second half proved much the same tale as York registered 11 more goals in the frame.
In all, nine different players scored for the Spartan side while Nicolich, Jenna Hiponia, and Molly Kerrigan each added assists. York's 44 shots against Wesley marked a tie for the fourth-most attempts in Spartan history.
Defensively, the York side only allowed four goals on 12 Wolverine shots as the Green and White recorded 11 ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tina Nicklas picked up the win in the Spartan net. In her first start of her career, Nicklas made six stops. Wesley netminder Alyssa Batty suffers the loss as she made 13 saves.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday, February 24, when they travel to Goucher for a 4:00 pm tilt with the Gophers.
