Vrana and Wayson Land on the IWLCA All-Metro Region Squad
YORK, PA – The York College women’s lacrosse squad
received terrific news as a pair of Spartans were chosen to the
2010 IWLCA All-Metro Region squad. Senior defender Kelly
Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman
attack Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) each
posted stellar campaigns en route to their second-team
Vrana appears on the all-region squad for the first time in her career after a strong campaign for the Green and White in 2010. A terrific leader of a young group of defenders, Vrana started all 16 contests as a Spartan captain this season. She set a personal career high in draw controls with 31 while she also collected 33 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers. Wayson was chosen to the All-Capital Athletic Conference second-team for the second consecutive season.
Vrana improved tremendously during her four seasons in a Spartan uniform. After only appearing in six games as a rookie, she went on to play in all 50 contests over the next three years while starting 48 times including each of the Green and White’s 33 total games between 2009 and 2010.
“Kelly was nothing short of fantastic for us this season and throughout my three years here,” Spartan head coach Jen Dragoni said. “Her outstanding defensive ability kept us in a number of contests while her steadfast leadership both on and off the field was vital to our success and growth as a team.”
Wayson made a huge splash as she burst onto the collegiate scene in 2010. The rookie attack tallied a team-high 57 goals and 15 assists while starting all 16 games for the Green and White. She proved to a smooth and athletic attack that could create scoring chances for herself and her Spartan teammates.
A 2010 All-CAC second-team selection, Wayson is also the first Spartan freshman to be named to the IWLCA all-region squad.
“Kimmy was great by any standard,” Dragoni said. “From day one she became a major part of our squad. She had tremendous success this season and we are definitely looking forward to what she will bring in the coming years.”
With the selection of both Vrana and Wayson, the Spartans have now had a total of eight all-region selections over their brief five-season history. Additionally, the pair make it five straight seasons that at least one Spartan has landed on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Metro Region team.
