ARLINGTON, VA – The York College women's lacrosse team closed out their 2010 regular season with a tight 8-7 Capital Athletic Conference win at Marymount University on Wednesday night. The Spartans improve to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the CAC while the Saints fall to 3-10 and 2-5 in the conference. The Spartans secure the fifth seed in the CAC tournament and will travel to fourth seeded Stevenson University in the tournament's opening round.
The Saints dominated the opening half despite the Spartans taking a 1-0 lead just 1:20 into the game courtesy of a Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) unassisted goal. The Saints answered Shultz's opening salvo with a run of five goals while the Spartans were held scoreless the final 28:40 of the half.
The Spartans were only outshot 13-12 in the opening 30 minutes but Saint netminder Ashley Dodge recorded seven first half stops as the York offense was held in check.
The Green and White came out of the break a rejuvenated bunch as Shultz again kicked off the half with another unassisted goal just 1:39 into the second period of play. Senior Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored just under two minutes later, trimming the Saint lead to 5-3. A pair of Saints goals sandwiched another Shultz tally as the Saints led 7-4 with 19:35 left in the game.
The Spartan defense then turned up the intensity and the offense did enough to pull the game out. Whitney Kendall (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) began the four-goal run that would eventually win the game for York, scoring her first goal of the year with 18:02 remaining in regulation. Foy then banged home three straight goals to win the contest. Foy, playing in her final collegiate regular season game, scored at 9:34 to draw York to 7-6. She then tied the game at the 7:02 mark before recording the winning goal with 4:47 left.
The Saints had a chance to tie the game with 4:26 left but Spartan goalie Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) turned away Marymount's Lindsay Quinn, preserving the win.
Evans made seven stops in earning the win while Dodge recorded 11 saves for the Saints.
Foy powered the Spartans with four goals while Shultz recorded three tallies. Spartan standout freshman Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) was held scoreless on four shots for the first time in her collegiate career.
Stephanie Flood and Shantelle Valdez each had two goals to pace the Saints.
The Spartans finished the contest outshooting the Saints 27-19 while York had a slight 32-30 edge in ground balls. York won 11 of the 17 draw controls while the Spartans forced 23 Marymount turnovers.
The Spartans travel to Stevenson on Saturday to face the Mustangs with the game time to be determined. The Mustangs picked up a 14-11 come-from-behind victory over the Green and White in their February 24 regular season match up.
