First Half Offensive Leads York to Victory

LATROBE, PA – On the strength of a nine-goal first half, the York College women’s lacrosse squad picked up a 12-9 non-conference victory Wednesday on the road at St. Vincent. The triumph improves York’s 2010 record to 7-4, matching their win total from a season ago, while the Bearcats drop to 0-5 on the year.

Spartan rookies Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) and Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) continued their impressive freshmen-year performances as they each notched four goals while Wayson posted a pair of helpers.

Wayson, who now sports a team-best 40 goals and 15 assists, tallied the game’s first two scores to put the Spartans up 2-0 just 2:05 into the contest.

She would then notch York’s third, after a pair of Bearcat tallies, as the Spartans held a 3-2 advantage at the 20:35 mark.

St. Vincent tied the score once more, on a Megan Fisher goal with 18:51 left in the opening stanza. That would be the final game the contest would be tied, but not the last time the outcome would be in doubt.

On the heels of a two Schultz tallies, another one by Wayson, and a score from Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) the Green and White built a 7-4 lead with less than eight minutes to go in the frame.

That three-goal lead soon evaporated and became a mere one when Emily Fedor and Alyssa Lang both tallied to bring the host Bearcats to within a goal at 7-6 with 2:06 remaining.

Undaunted, the Spartans came right back to notch the first half’s last two goals, courtesy of Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford Tech) and Schultz, to take a 9-6 lead into the break.

The second stanza would not be nearly as close as the York side built a sizable advantage.

Schultz and Kasie White (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) both tallied in the latter half before Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) put York up by their largest margin at 12-7 with 17:57 to play in the game. A pair of late Bearcat scores led to the final 12-9 result.

For the contest, the Spartans outshot their hosts 24-16, including a 15-8 first half margin. York was a near flawless 9-for-10 on clear attempts while securing 14 of the 21 draw controls. The Spartans were extremely successful in free position attempts, an area where they have struggled this season, going 6-for-6 in those opportunities.

Aside from Wayson’s and Schultz’s offensive exploits, rookie defender Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding) collected a game-high six draw controls while securing three ground balls for the Spartans. Senior captain Kelly Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) won four draw controls herself while picking up a pair of ground balls. Goalkeepers Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and Tina Nicklas (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) split the duties in the cage as they combined for five saves.

Fedor tallied a hat trick for the Bearcats while Fisher and Lang each scored twice. Fisher also picked up four draw controls. Danielle Yoncha recorded three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. In the goal, Jennifer Forsyth made nine saves.

The Spartans remain on the road for their next contest. York travels to St. Mary’s City, Md. for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt with the Seahawks on Saturday, April 3. Start time at St. Mary’s is slated for 12:00 p.m.
