Green and White Grab First CAC Win

FREDERICK, MD – Freshman sensation Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) led the York College women’s lacrosse team to an 11-3 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Hood Saturday afternoon. The Spartans improve overall record to 6-4 and capture their first league victory of the season (1-3 CAC) while the Blazers fall to 2-7 (0-5 CAC).

Wayson, who has become an offensive juggernaut for the Green and White in just her freshman season, tallied six times to increase her team-leading total to an impressive 36.

The rookie attack opened up York’s scoring just 3:33 into the game to begin a 7-0 first half run. Wayson notched two more goals at the end of the frame while Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford Tech) and Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each recorded two scores apiece.

Up by a commanding 7-0 count after the first 30 minutes, the Green and White posted four more goals in the latter frame.

After Hood’s Caitlin Lawrence scored to open the second stanza, Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) recorded York’s eighth with 26:20 to play.

Three more Wayson goals, sandwiched by a pair of Blazer tallies, brought the final score to 11-3.

Aside from York’ offensive prowess, the Green and White won 12-of-16 draw controls and were successful on 11-of-13 clears. Hood did take the lead in ground balls 22-13.

Doak had an all-around quality performance as she posted an assist, collected three draw controls, picked up one ground ball, and caused a Blazer turnover. Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and Tina Nicklas (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) split the goalkeeping duties. Evans, who started the contest, posted four saves to capture the victory while Nicklas registered eight stops.

For the Blazers, Lauren Perzan snagged five ground balls, one draw control, and caused two turnovers while Abby Dyjack picked up four ground balls.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, March 31. York travels to St. Vincent for a 4:00 p.m. mid-week non-conference tilt.
