Wayson, Evans Lead Spartans Over Gophers
YORK, PA - Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) tallied six goals and Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) notched 15 saves to lead the York College women's lacrosse team to a 9-4 Wednesday afternoon victory over visiting Goucher. The non-conference triumph pushes the Spartans' early-season mark to 3-2 while the Gophers fall to 2-3.
Wayson continued her incredible start to her freshman season as she led the Green and White with a career-best six-goal effort. The rookie sensation, who notched all six on just nine shots, recorded the Spartans' first five goals en route to increasing her season-total to a team-high 20 tallies.
In addition to Wayson's efforts, Evans also posted a career day. Of the freshman goalkeeper's 15 saves, 11 came during her stonewall second-period when she and the Spartan defense shutout the Gophers for the entire 30-minute stanza. Goucher would rattle off 17 shots in the second half, but none found their mark as Evans, and later Tina Nicklas (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), stymied the Gopher offense.
The game's first 19 minutes proved the Wayson and Hannah Khin show as the two combined for the game's first five goals. Wayson put York up 1-0 with the contest's first goal at the 20:38 mark in the first half. Khin erased that Spartan advantage however, with back-to-back goals, the latter coming with 12:03 remaining in the frame. Wayson then tied the game at two just 29 seconds later on an Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) assist.
Khin then gave the Gophers their final lead of the game at the 11:04 mark, with her third goal of the game.
Wayson would then tie the game at four on a free position shot before halftime and then open up the second stanza with another free position goal. Wayson's fifth goal of the game, with 29:23 remaining in the game, proved to be the game-winner for the Spartans.
Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford Tech), and Lauren Kula (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) each added second-half scores for the Spartans while Wayson added one more during the frame.
The Green and White will look to ride that momentum as they quickly return to action. York hosts Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury on Friday, March 12, at 3:30 p.m.
