YORK, PA – The York College women’s lacrosse team dropped their second straight contest Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to the College of Wooster. The low-scoring affair leaves the Green and White with a 2-5 mark for the season while the Fighting Scots improve to 2-0.
In what turned out to be a defensive battle, Wooster gained the early upper-hand with the game’s first score 3:45 into the match. Taryn Higgins, who would prove to be a thorn in the Spartans’ side throughout the game, put the visitors up 1-0 with her second tally of the 2009 season.
Higgins struck again at the 15:29 mark of the first frame, touching up the Spartans for her second tally of the game. On the man-down goal, Carly Carey provided Higgins with the assist as the Fighting Scots led 2-0.
Wooster would go on to score two more times in the period to procure a 4-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Spartans broke out of their scoreless slump early in the second frame as Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) combined with Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) to notch Bell’s 12th score of the season at the 26:23 mark. Bell’s score cut the Fighting Scots’ lead to a manageable 4-1.
Unfortunately for the home squad, that Wooster lead expanded back to four goals within 16 seconds. Higgins quickly tallied her third of the day to put the Fighting Scots up 5-1 with 26:07 left to play.
Bell would not allow the Spartans to go away however, as she tallied for the second time with 24:57 to play. Down 5-2, Bell’s 13th score of the season put the York side within striking distance.
The Spartans’ third goal of the contest came with 4:04 remaining as Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) notched her third of her rookie campaign. Kanzler’s score could not spark a Spartan comeback however as Wooster held strong for the 5-3 victory.
Despite the defensive battle, the Fighting Scots still managed to fire off 23 shots while the Spartans posted 15 attempts. Wooster also edged the Spartans 13-12 in ground balls and 6-4 in draw controls.
Higgins proved the offensive star for the visitors with her
natural hat trick. She was exceptionally efficient with her
attempts as she scored on each of her three shots. Higgins also
collected two ground balls and one draw control. Carey added two
points on a goal and an assist while Hillary Darragh had two
helpers. Emmy Cassagnol picked up three ground balls and caused
three Spartan turnovers while Britta Harman also collected three
ground balls. Goalkeeper Jamie Dannenberg captures her second win
of the year, making six saves for the Fighting Scots.
Bell paced the Spartans’ offensive effort with two scores as she currently ranks second on the squad with her 13 season goals. The senior captain also won four draw controls and caused two turnovers. In addition to her goal, Kanzler also caused a team-high three turnovers. Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) takes the loss in the Spartan cage despite making 11 saves in her 60 minutes.
York will look for a return to the win column on Tuesday, March 17, as the Green and White host Susquehanna University. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
