Spartans Tally Fifth Win with Victory over Gators
YORK, PA—The York College women’s
lacrosse team notched their second straight win Tuesday with a 19-6
triumph over visiting Notre Dame (Md.). The non-conference win
brings the Spartans to an overall record of 5-7 and drops the
Gators to 2-7.
York’s high-scoring offense was
lead by junior Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) and freshman Meaghan Doak (Pylesville,
Md./Harford Tech) who each scored five goals. Foy and Doak
also found ways to get their teammates involved in the scoring as
they had three and one assist, respectively.
The Spartans opened the game with a pair
of goals from Doak. She notched her first goal on an assist from
Foy 1:29 into the half and found the back of the net again 2:44
later.
Notre Dame retaliated with three goals
from Ashleigh Johnson and Lauren Terry, but Spartan freshman
Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added
two goals of her own to keep the Green and White in the lead.
The Gators notched two more goals in the
first half, but it was not enough to keep up with the Spartan
offense.
Foy started her scoring with a tally at
16:10 and added two more in the first period. Doak then beat the
goalkeeper again for her third goal of the half. Sophomores
Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) and Katie Mansell (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake
Senior) each tallied a goal and sent the Spartans into
halftime with a 10-5 lead.
The Gators struck first in the second
period with a goal from Ashley Demski at the 28:34 mark.
Demski’s goal would be Notre Dame’s last, however, as
the Spartan defense, led by senior goalkeeper Anne Feustle
(Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), shut out the Gators for the
rest of the game. Feustle tallied two saves in the second half on
19 shots and racked up seven saves over the course of the game.
Following Demski’s goal, the Green
and White put nine more points on the board. Doak and Foy each
added two more goals and Kerrigan notched her second of the game.
Senior Megan Bell (Westminster Md./Francis Scott
Key) tallied a goal at the 16:30 mark for her 22nd goal of
the season. Freshman Rachel Klado (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) padded the Spartans’ lead with two scores and
junior Courtney Heller (Reisterstown,
Md./Franklin) notched her first goal of the season to
finish out the scoring.
For the game, the Spartans outshot the
Gators 44-18. Gators goalkeeper Amanda Arkwright racked up 16 saves
while trying to slow down the Spartans. The Green and White
controlled the ball and maintained possession by winning the
battles in draw controls (15-12) and ground balls (22-10). The
Spartans also limited themselves to 11 turnovers while forcing the
Gators into 18 turnovers. York kept their offense moving by
successfully clearing 11 times on 15 attempts.
Foy’s productive day brought her to
a season total 31 points on 26 goals and five assists. Doak’s
efforts added six points to her season statistics as the Spartans
rookie now has ten goals for the season. Kanzler’s pair of
goals boosted her to 13 for her freshman campaign.
The Green and White take the field again
on April 4 when they face Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic
Conference matchup. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
