WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Junior captain Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) tallied four goals as the York College women’s lacrosse team officially got off the snide Tuesday afternoon, capturing their first win of the year courtesy of an 11-9 result over Lycoming. The win gives the Spartans their first of the year as they move to 1-3 (0-2 CAC) while the Warriors open the 2009 season in the loss column.
     Foy kicked-off the scoring in the game’s fourth minute, posting her team-leading fifth goal of the year at the 25:42 mark. Just over one minute later, sophomore Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) gave the Spartans a 2-0 margin with her third of the season.
     As is prone to happen, almost immediately following Kerrigan’s tally, Lycoming came up with one of their own. Sammi Jo Bell and Amanda Baker combined to cut York’s lead o 2-1 merely 20 seconds after Kerrigan scored. The Warriors then knotted the score at 2-2 4:19 later on a Bri Robertson goal with 19:52 remaining in the first half.
     Foy then returned the lead to the Spartan side with 14:55 to go in the opening frame. Foy’s second of the day and sixth of the year gave York a slight 3-2 margin.
     Both offenses quieted for nearly 15 minutes as neither side could bust through for a score. The Green and White’s Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) finally scorched the Warrior net with just 1:03 left in the half. Bell’s fourth of the season provided the Spartans with a 4-2 edge heading into the break.
     Following the intermission, it took Foy a mere 58 seconds to notch her third tally of the game. The Spartans’ now owned a three-goal cushion, by far their largest lead of the young season.
     That lead would not last long however, as the Warriors unleashed three consecutive goals within a 3:07 period, bringing the score to 5-5. Justine Titko opened the run with an unassisted tally just 58 seconds after Foy’s second half goal. Megan McIntyre swiftly followed Titko’s score, as it took her only 57 seconds to cut the Spartan lead to one. In under two minutes, the Spartan lead had gone from a solid three to a mere one at 5-4.
     Crystal Cody finished off the Lycoming spurt, and deadlocked the score, with her first of the game at the 24:57 mark of the second.
     Kerrigan brought an end to the Warrior onslaught and gave the Spartans back the lead at the 23:50 mark, but once again it only took 58 seconds for Lycoming to knot the score, this time at 6-6. Cody provided the tying goal on a Robertson assist.
     The Spartan offense would then tally the next five goals and secure an 11-6 advantage. Bell and Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) provided the first two of the five-goal barrage to give the Green and White an 8-6 lead with 20:29 remaining in the first.
     Astonishingly, the flood of goals that appeared in the first ten minutes of the second period simply dried up over the next ten minutes. Neither side posted a score between the 19:59 and 10:00 marks.
     However, almost as soon as the clock ticked over that 10:00 mark, the offensive bombardment resumed.
     Foy once again found the back of the Warrior net, this time with 9:39 to play. Bell and freshman Whitney Kendall (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) completed the burst with scores at the 7:27 and 6:56 marks respectively. The five-goal run provided the Spartans with a significant 11-6 lead
     Lycoming, who scored three times in three minutes earlier in the half, went on a similar run scoring three more times over the contest’s final 5:03. Robertson notched her second of the day with 5:03 remaining. Fortunately for the Green and White, Lycoming would not score again until the 1:33 mark when Sammi Jo Bell was assisted by Kelli Morsey. Lycoming’s Bell then finished off the scoring with the game’s final score with only 28 seconds to play.
     The Spartans end up in the win column for the first time this season despite being outshot by their hosts 25-22. The Warriors also collected more ground balls, finishing with 25 to York’s 22.
     Foy was all over the field for the Green and White. The junior captain posted four goals on eight shots while she collected seven ground balls and caused four turnovers. Bell recorded a hat trick of her own with three scores while she also chipped in with two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kanzler and Kendall each notched their first collegiate goals in the win. Senior goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) takes the win in the Spartan cage as she provided eight saves over her 60 minutes of work.
     Bell provided the Warriors with a trio of scores and two ground balls. Cody and Robertson also added a pair of tallies each while Titko and McIntyre each recorded a goal and an assist. Grace Garguilo collected a team-high four ground balls. Brittany Bryan registers the loss in the Warrior net as she made six stops in 60 minutes of action.
     The Spartans will look to add another to the win column this Thursday as the Green and White open up their home slate. York is set to entertain Marywood University at noon in a non-conference contest at Kinsley Field.
