Spartans Snap Skid with Win at Frostburg
FROSTBURG, MD – Megan Foy (Toms
River, N.J./Toms River North) posted her third hat trick
of 2009 Wednesday afternoon to lead the York College women’s
lacrosse team to a 10-7 non-conference victory over Frostburg. The
visiting Spartans (3-7) used five goals in each 30-minute half to
snap their four-game winless streak and drop the host Bobcats to
2-6 on the year.
Foy was outstanding for the Green and White as she was all over the field. Aside from her three goals, the junior captain collected seven ground balls, picked up four draw controls, caused seven turnovers, and was a flawless 2-for-2 in free position attempts. Foy’s trio of scores vaults her to the 20-goal mark, as she now leads the Spartans with 22 points on the year.
Frostburg jumped out front early, tallying the game’s first score a mere four seconds into the contest. Ali Kapustin fed Joanna McIntire who immediately gave her squad the early advantage.
York responded quickly with two goals before the 26:00 mark. Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) opened the Spartans’ scoring with her tenth of the year, as she become the third Spartan to record double-digits in goals this season. Freshman Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md/Harford Tech) followed Kerrigan’s score with the fourth of her rookie campaign at the 26:03 mark, giving the Green and White a 2-1 margin.
The Bobcats regained the lead with back-to-back scores before the Spartans struck back with six straight. Down 3-2, senior captain Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) knotted the score at three, her 15th of 2009, with 9:10 left to play in the first. Bell’s tally kick-started the 6-0 spurt that spilled well into the second half.
During the run, Foy notched her first two of the day while freshman Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), who has become a solid threat on the offensive end, also added a pair. The six-goal spurt pushed the Spartans out to an 8-3 lead with 19:17 to play.
Frostburg broke York’s run with 18:33 remaining on an Elisabeth Hildebrand tally.
The Spartans would steal the momentum right back however, as Foy registered her third just 1:03 after Hildebrand’s goal.
The hosts slashed deep into the Spartans’ apparent comfortable lead with three consecutive scores in under seven minutes. Rachel Frank opened the 3-0 dash at the 14:31 mark. Katie Dannemann and Meredith Martin each scored, with goals at the 11:11 and 7:49 marks, to cut the York lead to a manageable two at 9-7.
With 6:12 remaining in the game, Bell provided the Green and White with a needed insurance goal on a free position attempt. Now owning a 10-7 lead, York’s defense would hold the Bobcats to just two shots throughout the final six minutes to secure the victory.
For the game, the Spartans held a slight 28-27 edge in shots, but the Bobcats did rattle off 19 of those attempts in their second period. Conversely, Frostburg gained a 35-33 advantage in ground balls and a 10-9 lead in draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) posted a fantastic game between the pipes including a stellar second half. The captain kept the Bobcats at bay with 11 second half saves as she totaled 12 for the contest. As with Foy, Bell also filled-up the stat sheet with seven ground balls, a team-high four caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Kelly Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up five ground balls from her defensive position.
Frank led the Bobcats with two goals on five shots. Marissa Henderson collected six ground balls for the home squad and caused three turnovers while Jessica Beaty also caused three give-aways and picked up three ground balls. Goalkeeper Erin Morrell recorded ten saves over 60 minutes while she also snagged a game-high eight ground balls.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, March 28. York returns home for a Capital Athletic Conference contest against Hood at noon.
