YORK, PA - The York College women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Muhlenberg 16-12 in the Spartans' final regular season contest. The green and white now head into Capital Athletic Conference tournament sporting an 11-5 (4-3 CAC) record while the Mules improve to 11-3 on the season.
After a tough first half for the Spartans that saw the Mules take a commanding 8-4 lead, second frame began with more of the same. Muhlenberg's Alyssa Bascelli increased the Mule lead to five with a goal merely 15 seconds into the second half. Then the Spartans caught fire.
York would go on a 5-0 run over the contest's next ten minutes to draw the score to nine apiece. Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) slotted home her first goal of the game 26 seconds after Bascelli's tally. Ali Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) then notched back-to-back scores at 27:28 and 27:09.
Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) continued the spurt wit her second goal of the game at the 25:29 mark as the Spartans scored four times in less than four minutes. Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North County) capped the run and tied the score at nine with 19:04 to play.
Muhlenberg regained the lead shortly after Papsan's tying score. Megan Wilson and Bascelli each notched goals to pull ahead 11-9 with 17:51 left.
Another Spartan spurt would result in their first lead of the game as York would score three times to grab the 12-11 advantage. Meg Foy's (Tom's River, N.J./Tom's River North) sixth goal of the season came at a great time as she cut the lead to one with 15:28 showing on the clock. VanLuit then scored twice in quick succession, a feat which has become customary for the senior, to give the Spartans a 12-11 advantage with 14:07 remaining.
After spending a great deal of energy to get back in the game and take the lead, the York side simply ran out of steam. Muhlenberg would go on to score the game's final five goals and take home the 16-12 win.
For the contest, Muhlenberg held a slight lead in shots 36-35 as well as in ground balls 16-12. Both squads were 2-for-4 in free position shots.
York posted a trio of hat-trick recipients as Napolitano, VanLuit, and Papsan each recorded three scores. Napolitano finishes the 2008 regular season with a team-best 58 goals scored. VanLuit has registered 50 tallies while Papsan holds the team's fourth-best mark with 24. Foy, Napolitano, and Lindsay Nixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each recorded an assist on the day.
Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was once again solid in the midfield for the green and white collecting six ground balls.
The Mules' Amanda McGovern was the game's high scorer, tallying five times while she also added a pair of assists. Ruth Morrongiello and Bascelli each registered three goals for the visitors. Taylor Armstrong continues to be a catalyst on Muhlenberg's offensive end, registering four assists and one goal. The senior is one of the top assist artists in the country as she has distributed 44 helpers on the season.
Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) takes the loss in net for the Spartans as she recorded 14 saves. Muhlenberg's Allisyn Vachon played well for the Mules as she made 12 stops to keep the Spartans at bay.
York now heads into the CAC playoffs which begin on Sunday, April 17. The Spartans, owners of the fourth seed as a result of their 4-3 CAC record, are set to host Villa Julie in the first-round match-up. Please visit www.ycpspartans.com for game time.
