YORK, PA - The York College women’s lacrosse team cruised
to a dominating 17-3 victory over Frostburg State University on a
sun splashed yet chilly afternoon at York’s Kinsley Field.
The victory ups the Spartans’ 2008 mark to 7-4 while the
Bobcats fall to 4-4 on the campaign.
Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock)
was the Spartans’ leading scorer for the contest tying her
career-high with six goals. VanLuit’s speed proved lethal
against Frostburg’s defense. On several occasions, the senior
attacker collected the ball near the midfield line and went on a
dead sprint toward the Bobcat goal leaving defenders in her wake
before slotting home the score. VanLuit now has 36 goals on the
season, tied for tops on the squad.
Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area
Christian) and Carla Thomas (Ellicott City,
Md./Howard) joined VanLuit in the offensive explosion as
they each recorded a hat trick. For the season, Napolitano is even
with VanLuit’s 36 tallies while the senior midfielder has
dished out a team-best 12 assists including two against Frostburg.
Thomas’ trio of scores nearly doubled her season total
bumping her mark to seven goals on the year.
The green and white came out firing as they pounced on the Bobcats
for eleven first half goals. VanLuit was the first Spartan with her
name on the score sheet, recording the game’s first score
just 1:01 after the opening whistle. The Spartans would add two
more scores before Frostburg notched their first goal with 23:14
showing on the first half clock.
From there, York would score six straight times over a ten minute
period to move the score to 9-1 in favor of the home squad.
Napolitano began the run with a tally at the 21:03 mark and then
closed out the spurt with a free position shot with 11:18 left in
the frame.
After a Frostburg score from Carly Rihard and two more York
tallies, one each from Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St.
Mary's) and VanLuit, the Spartans held a commanding 11-2
advantage at the halftime break.
After the Bobcats opened the second stanza with their third notch
of the game, at the 28:04 mark to cut the lead to 11-3, the green
and white went on another six goal run to close the game. Once
again, Napolitano began the spurt with her third score with 22:38
remaining in the game. VanLuit would score her final three goals
during the run with the last coming with 4:07 to go in the game.
Melissa Olsen (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) netted
the game’s final score with 2:07 to complete York’s
17-3 victory.
For the game, the Spartans rattled off an incredible 43 shots to
Frostburg’s 12 attempts. The Bobcats only forced Anne
Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), who picked up the
win in the York net, to make three saves in her 60 minutes of work.
Frostburg’s goalkeeper Erin Morrell made 12 stops.
The Spartans also tied a program-high collecting 55 ground balls
to Frostburg’s 34 while the Bobcats held a 13-9 advantage in
draw controls.
Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) played
exceptionally well on the defensive end for the green and white
collecting a career-best nine ground balls and causing a game-high
four turnovers. Foy’s nine ground balls ties the program mark
for most ground balls in one game. Kristy Powers’
(Westminster, Md./Westminster) work in the midfield led to
six ground balls while Davis added a pair of scores for the
Spartans. Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North
County) and Lindsay Nixon (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) chipped in with a goal apiece.
The Bobcats’ received scores from Rihard, Elisabeth
Hildebrand, and Meredith Martin. Hildebrand also picked up five
ground balls and caused two turnovers. Martin and Jessica Beaty
each collected four ground balls apiece.
York returns to action on Thursday, April 3, when they host
Misericordia in a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt.
