Big First Half Lifts Spartans on Senior Day

YORK, PA - The York College women’s lacrosse team used a 13-goal first half to roll past the Farmingdale State Rams in non-conference action on Saturday morning in York. The Spartans, who celebrated their seven seniors prior to the game, improve to 9-4 overall while the Rams fall to 2-4. The Spartans have won four straight, their longest win streak in school history while the nine wins continues to raise that school record for victories in season.

The Spartans began their offensive outburst early. Carla Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) kicked off the scoring with a free position goals just 1:51 into the game. That started a six-goal outburst that covered the first 9:47 of the game to give York the early advantage. Thomas and Lindsay Nixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each got a pair of goals during the run while seniors Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) also scored during the spurt.

After Jaclyn Messina got the Rams on the board on a free position shot at the 19:57 mark, the Spartans ripped off three more goals as Napolitano got a pair while Nixon tallied her third of the game. Farmingdale received a goal from Alecia Fuschetto to cut the Spartan lead to 9-2. The green and white responded with three more goals as Napolitano, Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and Nixon scored, pushing the York lead to 12-2. The two teams each scored a goal in the final three minutes of the game as York took a 13-3 break to the intermission.

The second half lacked some of the offensive punch but York was able to get significant playing time for the entire team. The Spartans outscored the Rams 4-3 in the second half for their final margin of victory.

The Spartans were led by Napolitano and Nixon. Napolitano had five goals as she now has 46 for the year as she went over the 100 career point plateau at York College. Napolitano now has 104 career points on 66 goals and 38 assists in her sterling two year career at York. Nixon added four goals and one assist as she made the most of 2008 senior day. VanLuit, Thomas, and Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) each contributed a pair of goals for the Spartan offense.

Fuschetto and Messina led the Rams with two goals each. Jennifer Jung and Monica Grisales each added one goal to the Farmingdale attack.

Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) went the distance in net for the Spartans as she registered two saves in earning the win. Janine Forman suffered the loss but made 20 saves for the Rams.

The Spartans finished the game outshooting their guests 45-14 while they also held a 30-18 edge in ground balls. York won 13 of the 25 draw controls while the Rams committed 26 turnovers, 17 of which were caused by the green and white.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they travel to Wesley to take on the Wolverines in Dover, Del. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
