Spartans Push Win Streak to Five with 22-9 Victory at Wesley
Dover, DE - The York College women’s lacrosse team
captured their fifth straight victory Thursday afternoon with 22-9
win over Wesley College in Dover, Del. The win pushes the
Spartans’ 2008 mark to 10-4 including a 4-3 record in Capital
Athletic Conference play. The Wolverines drop to 5-7 and 1-5 in the
CAC.
Spartan senior midfielder Ali Napolitano (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis Area Christian) was the Spartans’
leading scorer on the day as she tallied five goals and dished out
a pair of assists. Lindsay Nixon (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) and Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis,
Md./St. Mary's) each recorded four scores on the day while
Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North County) and Jaclyn
VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) each added a hat
trick.
York scored the game’s first eight goals and nine of the
first ten. York held a commanding 10-4 lead at the end of the first
half of play. Napolitano recorded three of her five scores in the
first 30 minutes.
After the halftime break, Papsan scored the second half’s
first goal before Wesley scored twice to cut the Spartan advantage
to 11-6 with 27:53 left in the game.
The Spartans would then embark on an 11-1 run to bump their lead
to 22-7 with 7:47 still remaining. Six different Spartans scored
during the spurt which ultimately sealed the game. Wesley would
tack on two more with less than four minutes to play to provide the
final score line of 22-9.
For the game, the Spartans held a 33-25 advantage in shots while
Wesley picked up 22 ground balls to York’s 21. The green and
white also won 17 draw controls while the Wolverines earned 15.
Carla Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Howard),
Kristy Powers (Westminster, Md./Westminster), and
Melissa Olsen (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) each
scored once for the Spartan side. Nixon assisted on a trio of goals
while Thomas had two helpers. Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air,
Md./Institute of Notre Dame), Kelly Vrana (West
Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Papsan, and VanLuit
each chipped in with an assist.
For the Wolverines, Amanda Browning and Stephanie Johnson each
registered three goals. Jade Martin, Brooke Bennett, and Anna Moore
each added one score apiece.
Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) picks
up the win in the Spartan net making eleven saves in her 60 minutes
of work. Farryn Kauffman made nine stops in the loss.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, April 15, when the travel to the College of Notre Dame of Maryland for a 4:30 non-conference tilt.
