FREDERICK, MD-The York College women’s lacrosse team handed first-year head coach Jen Dragoni her first Capital Athletic Conference win as the Spartans defeated Hood College 23-3 in conference action on Tuesday in Frederick, MD. The Spartans improve to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the CAC while the Blazers fall to 0-6 and 0-4 in the conference.
The Spartans jumped on the hosts early as they scored nine straight goals in the opening 15 minutes of the game. York’s Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) scored the game’s first goal just under five minutes into the game. Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) scored York’s next two goals as the green and white offense kicked into high gear early in the game.
Hood halted the Spartan spurt with a Lauren Perzan goal with 12:58 left in the first half. York answers Hood’s goal with five more tallies including two from Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and two more from Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) as the Spartan lead grew to 14-1. The Blazers’ Brandy Noel connected for Hood’s second goal with 2:09 left in the half but the Spartans scored a pair of goals inside the final 49 seconds of the half to take a 16-2 lead to the locker room.
The scoring pace settled in the second half as the Spartans outscored the hosts 7-1. Seven different players registered second half goals for York.
Napolitano paced the green and white offense as the senior had seven points on five goals and two assists. Bell, Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North County), and Davis each contributed five points to the win. Bell and Davis each had three goals and two assists while Papsan had two goals and three helpers. Sophomore Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) added three goals while VanLuit contributed two tallies and one assist. Senior Kristy Powers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) chipped in with a pair of tallies while Melissa Olsen (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's), Carla Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), and Danielle Seling (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) each added one goal to the Spartan attack.
Junior goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) posted the win as she allowed three goals while she registered one save in her 60 minutes of action. Lauren Lieb suffered the loss as she allowed all 23 Spartan goals. Lieb made 11 saves in her 60 minutes of play.
The Spartans finished the game holding a 39-6 edge in shots including a 34-4 advantage in shots on goal. York was 4-for-6 in free position shots while the green and white finished with a 22-7 edge in draw controls. York committed a season-low six turnovers while they forced Hood into 16 miscues.
York steps out of conference play on Friday as they travel to Susquehanna to face the Crusaders in a 6:00 pm contest.
