Big Second Half Not Enough to Lift Spartans over Falcons

GRANTHAM, PA-The York College women’s lacrosse team had a huge second half but fell short of victory at Messiah College on Saturday as the Falcons posted a narrow 14-12 non-conference win in Grantham, PA. The Falcons improve to 1-1 for the season while the Spartans fall to 2-3 overall.

The Falcons jumped all over the Spartans early in the match. Messiah scored the first five goals of the game to seize the early momentum. The five goals came in opening 5:49 of the game as the Falcons looked like they were going to rout the green and white. York regained their balance and trimmed the lead to 5-3 with three straight goals. Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) got York on the board with an unassisted goal at the 20:25 mark of the first half. Senior Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) tallied York’s second goal with 12:39 left in the half and senior Kristy Powers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) closed out York’s first half scoring with a free position goal at the 2:40 mark of the stanza. Unfortunately for York, after holding Messiah scoreless for almost 22 minutes, the Falcons put home two goals in the final 2:30 of the half to take a 7-3 lead to the break.

VanLuit started the second half scoring for the Spartans as she struck for a goal just 41 seconds into the half. That began a stretch that saw the two teams alternate scoring the next 12 goals. That left the Spartans trailing 13-9 with 12:41 left. VanLuit started a three-goal spurt for the Spartans that trimmed the Messiah lead to 13-12 with five minutes left. York got two shots on goal in the final two minutes but Falcon goalie Jen Venter saved both shots, preserving the one-goal lead. Messiah got an insurance goal with just 18 seconds left to provide for their final two-goal margin of victory.

Venter recorded the win as she allowed the 12 Spartan goals while she recorded 13 saves. York goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) went the distance as she allowed 14 goals while she recorded nine saves.

Kara Geiman led the Falcons as she notched seven points on six goals and an assist. Jackie Dando added three goals and a pair of assists for five points. Megan Bovenzi chipped in with two goals while Betsy Caprio had a pair of assists for the hosts.

VanLuit led the Spartans with six goals and one assist for seven points. Napolitano added three goals and one assist while Lindsay Nixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Powers and Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) scored the other goals for York.

The Spartans out-shot the Falcons 32-30 including a 25-23 edge in shots on goal. Both squads recorded 14 draw controls but the Spartans were a dreadful 1-for-7 in free position shots. The Falcons had just one free position shot and they were unable to convert that try.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Hood College for a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time in Frederick is set for 4:00 pm.
