Spartan Women End Home Schedule with 13-12 Win Over Notre Dame
YORK, PA-The York College Spartan
women’s lacrosse team closed out the home portion of their
2007 schedule with a 13-12 non-conference win over College of Notre
Dame on Thursday in York. The Spartans improve to 7-9 overall while
the Gators fall to 12-2 for the campaign. The win snaps the
Gators’ six game win streak.
The Gators struck first as they tallied the
game’s first two goals. Junior Alison Napolitano (Annapolis,
MD/Annapolis Area Christian) got the green and white on the board
with a goal at the 22:46 mark of the first half. The Spartans tied
the game on a Brianna Yapps (Joppa, MD/Fallston) goal with 18:02
left on the clock. The Gators recaptured the lead with a pair of
goals but York responded with four straight goals to take the 6-4
lead with 5:49 remaining in the half. Tina Money tied the game
again with a pair of goals, the second coming with 1:54 on the
clock. The green and white closed out the first half scoring with a
Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) goal at 1:34 and a
Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, MD/North County) with just seconds left
before the half as York led 8-6 at the break.
York pushed the lead to 10-6 with a pair of
goals to open the half. The Gators answered the Spartan run with a
trio of goals from Anne Shippen, drawing Notre Dame to within one
at 10-9. The teams traded goals before the Spartans scored two
straight to push the lead to 13-10 with 4:58 remaining in
regulation.
The Gators received an Amelia Yatto goal with
3:39 remaining as they trimmed the Spartan lead to 13-11. Yatto
scored again with 2:01 left in regulation on a free position shot
as the Gators attempted to earn their 13th win of the season. The
Spartans earned the draw control off Yatto’s second goal but
a Spartan shot was saved, allowing the Gators possession. The
Spartans forced a Shippen turnover with 47 seconds left as the
green and white killed the clock to preserve the win.
Napolitano led the Spartans with five points on
three goals and two assists. Girsh notched three goals and an
assist for four points. Yapps chipped in with three points on two
goals and one assist. Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's)
recorded two goals for York.
Shippen paced the Gator offense as she had six
goals for Notre Dame. Money added three goals while Yatto had a
pair. Sara Breidenbaugh was the other multiple point scorer as she
chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) notched 12 saves for the Spartans to earn the win.
Amanda Arkwright suffered the loss as she allowed 13 goals while
she registered nine saves for the Gators.
Notre Dame outshot the Spartans 36-34 while both
teams had 23 ground balls. York committed 25 turnovers while the
Gators has 26 miscues in the game. The Spartans notched 17 draw
controls for the contest while the Gators had 10. Neither team was
very good in free position shots as the Gators were 3-for-14 while
the Spartans were just 2-for-9.
The Spartans conclude the season on Wednesday,
May 2 with a trip to Frostburg State University. Game time in
Frostburg, MD is set for 4:00 pm.
