Mary Washington Ends Spartans' Tournament Run
FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College
women’s lacrosse team fell to Mary Washington, 14-5, in the
semifinals of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championships on
Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Spartans fall to 6-9
for the year while the Eagles are now 14-5 as they advance to the
tournament championship game where they will face top-seeded
Salisbury.
The Eagles asserted themselves early, taking a
6-0 lead just under 13 minutes into the game. Senior Jaclyn Girsh
(Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and junior Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, MD/St.
Mary's) scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 6-2 with just
over 10 minutes left in the opening half. The Eagles reasserted
control of the contest as they scored the final four goals of the
half to take the 10-2 lead at the break.
The Eagles continued to increase the lead as
they scored three of the first four goals of the second of the
half, increasing their lead to 13-3. York tallied two straight
goals before the Eagles closed out the scoring with a Julia Milner
tally with 2:21 remaining in the game.
Meghan O’Leary led the Eagles with four
goals while Kaitlyn Barker also had four points on three goals and
an assist. Emily Talbot notched three goals for UMW while Sarah
Finney recorded a pair of goals. Margaret Murray and Ashley Scutari
each handed out a pair of assists for two points for the
Eagles.
York was led by the reigning CAC Player of the
Week, Brianna Yapps (Joppa, MD/Fallston). Yapps notched a goal and
an assist for two points. Girsh, Davis, Caitlin Walther
(Harleysville, PA/Souderton), and Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom,
PA/Susquehannock) scored the other goals for York.
Eagle goalie Meredith Deitrick notched 12 saves
in the win. Spartan sophomore netminder Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) recorded 22 saves in the loss.
The Eagles outshot the Spartans 48-24 while they
also held a 35-23 edge in ground balls. Neither team did a great
job of taking care of the ball as York had 36 turnovers while Mary
Washington had 32. The Eagles won 15 of the 21 draw controls for
the game.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday
afternoon as they host College of Notre Dame in a non-conference
contest. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm in York.
