Spartans Cruise Past Griffins, 17-6
YORK, PA-The York College women’s
lacrosse team rolled to a 17-6 non-conference win over Chestnut
Hill College on a blustery Thursday afternoon at Kinsley Field in
York. The Spartans, who snap their two game losing streak, improve
to 4-6 for the campaign while the Griffins fall to 4-3 for
2007.
The Spartans seized control of the game very
early as they scored the first eight goals of the game.
York’s opening goal came just over six minutes into the game
as Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian)
scored off a pass from Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac). That
assist would be the beginning of a busy day for Girsh. She scored
York’s second goal, assisted on the fourth, and scored the
fifth and sixth goals for the game as the green and white flexed
their offensive muscle early.
Katie Donovan stopped the Spartans’
game-opening run with with 3:32 remaining in the half with the
Griffins’ first goal. York responded by scoring four of the
final five goals of the half to take the 12-2 lead to the
break.
York’s lead grew to as many as 12 in the
second half before the green and white settled for the final 11
goal margin.
Girsh finished the game with nine points on six
goals and three assists. Girsh also had six draw controls and a
ground ball. Brianna Yapps (Joppa, MD/Fallston) and Kaitlin Davis
(Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) each added three goals and an assist for
four points. Napolitano chipped in with three points on two goals
and one assist. Megan Bell (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key)
finished with one goal and also had seven ground balls, two draw
controls and a game-high four caused turnovers.
Tiffanie Stanton led the Griffins with three
points on two goals and one assist. Donovan had two goals while
Morgan Nichols added one goal and one assist. Stephanie Carlyle
added a goal, four ground balls and one draw control.
York goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) played the initial 39:26 before giving way to
Kimberly Scheiman (Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn) for the final 20:34
of action. Fuestle made four saves to earn the win while Scheiman
notched three saves in her first appearance in the green and
white.
Stephanie Jordan went the distance in net for
the Griffins. She recorded nine saves as she allowed 17 Spartan
goals.
York finished the game holding a 34-16 edge in
total shots, a 31-20 margin in ground balls, and a 17-8 edge in
draw controls. Both teams were 0-for-2 in free position shots. The
Griffins committed 29 turnovers for the game while York was a shade
sloppy with 25 miscues.
The Spartans are off until Thursday, April 12
when they host Goucher in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.
Game time at Kinsley Field is set for 4:00 pm.
