Spartans Edge Mustangs in CAC Contest
STEVENSON, MD-The York College women’s
lacrosse team edged Villa Julie College 14-13 in Capital Athletic
Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in Stevenson, MD. The
Spartans improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the
Mustangs fall to 4-6 overall and 0-5 in the CAC.
The green and white jumped out to the 6-1 lead
less than 20 minutes into the game. The two teams traded goals in
the final 9:43 of the half as the Spartans took an 8-3 lead to the
break.
The Spartans maintained their five goal
advantage though out the first half of the second stanza. That
changed when four straight goals to pull to within one at 12-11
with 11:48 remaining in the game. Brianna Yapps (Joppa,
MD/Fallston), the reigning CAC Player of the Week, tallied her
fourth goal of the day with 4:01 remaining to increase the Spartan
lead to 13-11. The Mustangs received a Cat Connelly goal 32 seconds
later to pull to within one at 13-12. Sara Hester (Manteo,
NC/Howard, MD) scored the eventual game-winning goal with 37
seconds left in regulation. Connelly scored the game’s final
goal with 28 seconds remaining to provide for the final 14-13
score.
Yapps paced the Spartans with five points on
four goals and one assist. Senior Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac,
NY/Mahopac) and junior Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis
Area Christian) each added three points. Girsh had two goals and an
assist while Napolitano had a goal and two assists. Hester and
Lindsay Nixon (Westminster, MD/Westminster) each contributed a goal
and an assist.
Meghan Smith and Connelly each had four points
to lead the Mustangs. Smith had four goals while Connelly had three
goals and an assist. Jamie Jones chipped in with two goals and one
assist for three points.
Spartan goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) registered the win as she made 13 saves for the
green and white. Kaitlin Brzozowski made 16 saves in the loss for
the Mustangs.
The Spartans finished the game out-shooting the
Mustangs 38-36 while they also held a 23-15 margin in ground balls.
The Mustangs won 18 of the 29 draw controls for the game.
York returns to action on Saturday when they
host St. Mary’s College in a CAC contest at 1:00 pm at
Kinsley Field.
