Spartans Fall at Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College
women’s lacrosse team hung with number nine Mary Washington
in the first half but the Eagles outscored York 7-1 in the second
half to secure a 13-7 Capital Athletic Conference win on Saturday
in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in

The first half saw the hosts jump out to an early 3-1 lead. York cut their deficit to 3-2 on an Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) goal at the 19:54 mark. The Eagles scored the next two goals, taking a 5-2 advantage with 15:06 remaining in the first. The teams traded goals over the next eight minutes before the Spartans scored the final three goals of the half to tie the game at six. Two of those three goals came from Brianna Yapps (Joppa, MD/Fallston) in the final half minute of the stanza. Yapps scored with 30 seconds left and scored 13 seconds later off a pass from Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac).
The Eagles opened the second half with goals from Kaitlyn Barker and Caitlin Erickson before Yapps scored an unassisted goal at 20:44. That goal trimmed the Eagle lead to 8-7. Unfortunately, that would be York’s final goal of the day as Mary Washington scored five times over the next eight minutes to secure the win. Neither team scored after Margaret Murray’s goal at the 13:51 mark.
The Eagles were paced by Megan O’Leary as she tallied six points on three goals and three assists. Barker recorded four goals and one assist for five points while Erickson notched four points on two goals and two assists.
The Spartans were paced by Yapps as the junior standout had three goals. She also had four ground balls for the green and white. Sophomore Megan Bell (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) was the only other Spartan with multiple points as she contributed a goal and an assist. Bell also had a team-high four draw controls for YCP.
Sophomore netminder Anne Fuestle (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) recorded 11 saves in the loss. She falls to 2-4 for the campaign. Eagle goalie Helena Polites earned the win as she had 11 saves in the game.
Mary Washington outshot the Spartans 33-23 while they also had a 39-28 advantage in ground balls. The Spartans committed 31 turnovers while the Eagles had just 18 miscues. Mary Washington won 13 of the 22 draw controls in the game.
York returns to action on Tuesday at Villa Julie in a non-conference contest. Game time in Steveson, MD is set for 3:30 pm.
