Spartans Post Record-Breaking Effort Against Saints
YORK, PA-Junior attack Brianna Yapps (Joppa,
MD/Fallston) tied a single-game school record with 11 points as the
York College women’s lacrosse team scored a school-record 21
goals en route to a 21-10 Capital Athletic Conference win over
Marymount University on Wednesday in York, PA. The Spartans,
winners of two straight, improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAC
while the Saints fall to 0-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
The Spartans got on the board just 12 seconds
into the game as Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) won the draw
control, drove down the field and fed Lindsay Nixon (Westminster,
MD/Westminster) for the goal. The Saints responded by dominating
play over the next eight minutes of the game as they outscored York
3-0. The Spartans responded to the Saints spurt with ten unanswered
goals, taking an 11-3 lead with just over two minutes left in the
half. The Saints scored on an Ali Fulton free position shot with
1:28 remaining before the break but the Spartans responded with a
Yapps goal right before the half as they led 12-5 at the
intermission.
The green and white continued to get the better
of the play in the second half as they built their lead to as many
as 12 three different times in the half.
Yapps finished the game with eight goals and
three assists as she tied Girsh’s school record for points in
game. Yapps scored her eight goals on just nine shots. She also
contributed six ground balls for the Spartans. Junior Alison
Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) contributed six
points with three goals and three assists while Girsh had five
points on two goals and three assists. Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom,
PA/Susquehannock) and Nixon each chipped in with three goals and an
assist for four points. Junior Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, MD/North
County) was the Spartans’ other multiple goal scorer with a
pair of tallies for the game. Girsh and VanLuit each pulled in six
draw controls for the game.
The Saints were led by Caroline Thomas as she
notched four goals. Marie Montgomery added three goals and two
assists for a team-high five points. Anna Sody and Fulton each
chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) earned the win with ten saves on 25 Marymount
shots. Angela Saunders made seven saves for the Saints as she went
the distance in net.
The green and white finished the game holding a
39-25 edge in shots, a 43-29 bulge in ground balls, and a 19-14
advantage in draw controls. York committed 24 turnovers while the
Saints had 23 miscues.
The Spartans’ 21 goals breaks the previous
record of 20 established last season against Chestnut Hill. The 35
points for the green and white ties the school record that was set
in the April 6 win over Hood.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday
afternoon when they travel to Mary Washington to face the Eagles in
a CAC contest. Game time in Fredericksburg is set for 2:00 pm.
