Spartans Pick Up Win Number One
SCRANTON, PA-The York College women’s
lacrosse team posted their first win of the season as they defeated
College Misericordia 17-10 on Wednesday afternoon at the University
of Scranton. The Spartans improve to 1-3 for the year while the
Cougars falls to 2-1.
The Spartans played well in the opening half as
they led 9-5 at the break. The green and white outshot the hosts
28-18 while they also won nine of the half’s 15 draw
controls.
The green and white led by seven goals twice in
the second half including the final margin as they notched their
first victory of 2007.
The Spartans were led by Brianna Yapps (Joppa,
MD/Fallston) as the junior had four goals and two assists for six
points. Senior Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) added four goals
of her own while she also had seven ground balls and four draw
controls. Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area
Christian) contributed three goals and one assist. Kaitlin Davis
(Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and Caitlin Walther (Harleysville,
PA/Souderton) each added two goals.
Shannon Tinkham and Amanda Felte each tallied
four goals for the Cougars. Jamie Wargo contributed one goal and
two assists for the hosts.
Sophomore goalie Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) notched 14 saves for the Spartans as she earned the
win in goal. Heather Heun recorded 17 stops for Misericordia as she
went the distance in net. She falls to 2-1 for the season.
The Spartans finished the game holding a 52-34
edge in shots while they recorded 35 ground balls to 25 for the
Cougars. York converted on all three of their free position shots
in the game. The green and white held a 17-12 edge in draw controls
for the match.
York returns home on Saturday as they host
Catholic in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at Kinsley Field.
Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
