Warriors Down Spartans in Non-Conference Play
WILLIAMSPORT, PA-The York College
women’s lacrosse team gave a valiant effort but fell to
Lycoming College 17-11 in non-conference action in Williamsport, PA
on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors improve to 3-0 with the win
while the green and white fall to 0-2.
The Warriors tallied the first three goals of
the game before the Spartans’ Jaclyn Girsh (Mahopac,
NY/Mahopac) got the Spartans on the board with an unassisted goal
with 24:29 of the first half. After a Megan McIntyre goal pushed
the Lycoming lead to 4-1, Alison Napolitano (Annapolis,
MD/Annapolis Area Christian) picked up her first York College goal
at the 17:08 mark of the half. The Warriors scored the next three
goals to take a 7-2 lead. Caitlin Walther (Harleysville,
PA/Souderton) and Brianna Yapps (Joppa, MD/Fallston) scored
back-to-back goals, cutting the Lycoming lead to 7-4 with 6:38 left
in the half. The Warriors responded by scoring the final four goals
of the half to take an 11-4 lead to the break. The last two
Lycoming goals of the half came in the final 57 seconds as the
Spartans couldn’t finish the half strong.
The Warrior lead grew to 13-4 just 1:27 into the
second half before Girsh slowed the bleeding by picking up her
second goal of the game on a free position shot. After a Lycoming
goal from Megan Wallenhorst, York tallied four straight goals to
draw to within 14-9 with 7:56 remaining in regulation. The Warriors
salted away the game with three straight goals to take a 17-9 lead.
York put up two goals in the final 49 seconds but it was not enough
to prevent the Spartans from falling to 0-2.
McIntyre led the Warriors with four goals and
one assist while Sarah Wingerden chipped in four goals of her own.
Megan Wallenhorst picked up a team-leading six points on three
goals and three assists. Heather Suit contributed one goal and
three assists.
The Spartans were led by Yapps as the junior had
four goals. Girsh added three goals and two assists while Kaitlin
Davis (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) notched two goals and one
assist. Napolitano and Walther scored York’s other goals in
the game.
The Warriors out-shot the Spartans 39-33 and
edged the green and white in ground balls 28-26. York was 2-for-5
in free position shots while Lycoming was 3-for-8. The Warriors
dominated the draw controls winning 18 of the 29 draws.
Kristina Peacock posted the win in goal for the
Warriors as she made 11 saves while she allowed nine goals in 52:28
of work. Brittany Bryan played the final 7:32 of the game and
allowed two goals while she made three saves.
Sophomore Anne Fuestle (Baltimore,
MD/Catonsville) recorded 13 saves in 60 minutes of action while she
allowed the 17 Warrior goals.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as
they host Susquehanna in their 2007 home opener. It will be the
first women’s lacrosse game at the new Kinsley Field. Game
time Saturday is slated for 10:30 am.
