CAPE CHARLES, VA – The York College women's golf team sits second after day one of the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships at the Palmer Course at Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles, Virginia.
The Spartans totaled a team score of 381 as they trail leader Christopher Newport. The Captains finished the day with a team score of 326. Southern Virginia concluded the day in third with a team score of 440.
Freshman KeriAnne Mahoney led the Spartans as she shot a 93 to pace the Green and White. Mahoney started off with three bogeys but bounced back with a par and a birdie as she was two over through five. Bogeys on six, seven and nine and a double on eight left her with a front nine 44. Mahoney dropped eight strokes to par over the next five holes but notched pars on 15 and 16 before finishing with a bogey and a triple for a 49 on the back. Mahoney is four shots back of fifth place.
Freshmen Emma Harding, Bethany Snodgrass, and Lindsey Bonner are each tied for seventh as they all carded identical scores of 96. Harding had a rough start as she was seven over through three holes but battled back to card four straight pars. She ended the front nine shooting a 46. Harding had an uncharacteristic tough back nine as she shot 50 with just one par for her 96.
Snodgrass could not have gotten off to a worse start as she took an 11 on the opening par five and then took two doubles on two and three. She bounced back well to go five over par over the remaining five holes on the front nine as Snodgrass shot 51. She notched a pair pars on the back nine to finish with a 45 on the back nine.
Bonner was another Spartan who got off to a tough start as she was seven over on the first three holes of the round. She recovered to go four over on the final six holes as she carded a front nine 47. Bonner shot 49 on the back nine for her 96.
Freshman Eunice Sung was York's fifth player on Friday and she shot a 99 to finished day one tied for 11th. Sung shot a 52 on the front and a 47 on the back.
Sung will lead off the Spartan players on Friday as she tees off at 11:15 am. Bonner will be off at 11:25 followed by Snodgrass at 11:35, Harding at 11:45 and Mahoney at 11:55 am.
